The site announced Tuesday night that New York City’s Caroline’s Comedy Club will be closing down on Broadway at the end of the year. Located in Time Square at Broadway and West 50th Street, it will hold its final showings on December 31.
“People thought we were crazy about investing in Times Square, but only later to say we were ahead of the curve when global brands like Disney, Nasdaq, retailers and national corporations came to the neighborhood. Caroline Hirsch first opened the club 40 years ago in Chelsea as a cabaret, and later transitioned into a comedy club by booking Jay Leno as its first performer. The venue later moved to South Street Seaport in 1987 before settling in Times Square in 1992, at a time when most citizens considered the area unsatisfactory due to high crime rates and a lack of support from the government. Comedians from all walks of life have played at the club, including Jerry Seinfeld, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Patrice O’Neal, and others.
Lockdown is not the endgame for the brand, Carolyn noted, hinting that the next one will be “bigger and bring the best comedy to more people in more places”. It will also continue to grow the New York Comedy Festival throughout the city and the rest of the United States.
