Fox’s “Monarch” was canceled after one season

The country queen’s crown was too heavy for Fox.

“Monarch,” which stars Anna Friel, Trace Adkins, Susan Sarandon, Joshua Sasse, and Beth Ditto, will not return for a second season. The first season finale aired on December 6.

The drama opened after a dual showing of the NFL, debuting in a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 with and 3.8 million viewers, becoming Fox’s most watched fall premiere in three years. “Monarch” averaged 4.1 million multi-platform viewers across 11 episodes as it failed to resonate with viewers.

Created by Melissa London Helfers, the musical series was produced during the COVID-19 pandemic and was originally scheduled to premiere in January 2022. Conceived for a short run, it was then pushed to the fall.

The show follows the “First Family of Country Music” led by Dottie Roman (Sarandon), who shockingly dies in the series premiere, despite being the face on every billboard of the show. Over the course of the season, her husband, Albie (Adkins), tries to keep Monarch’s business afloat with the help of their two daughters and son, who are all hiding secrets of their own.

“Monarch” marked the network’s first fully produced in-house scripted series.
