Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well: The Short Film” earned the singer a Best Music Video nomination at the 2023 Grammys for its harrowing display of a broken romance. Now, she’s giving fans a behind-the-scenes peek at how she put it together for the adult movie.
On Thursday, Swift shared a six-minute episodic video consisting of collages with her directorial presence front and center. Her vision is clear as she coaches co-stars Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien through carefully planned scenes, sometimes even stepping into the moment to point out the appropriate timing and emotions associated with each move.
“We should always see the fakeness in your smile,” she tells Cinque in one take. Swift is also seen meticulously directing the extras in the dinner party scenes and Sink’s twenty-first birthday scene which she watches intently, ordering the timing of the song “It’s supposed to be fun at twenty-one” to go along with Sink blowing out birthday candles.
“I Wanna [the video] It would be as if we were watching someone lose an element of their innocence and naivety,” she explains. “We are watching her figure out how to turn it into something beautiful…in older [version of] It has stillness and stoicism and seriousness, but sadness. She’s fine, but she’s not the one we met. So it’s just one of those things of what’s lost and what’s found, and like, we’re watching someone grow up.”
Swift uploaded the clip to her Instagram with the caption thanking both the cast and cinematographer Rina Yang along with the film’s producer, Saul Germaine.
In her caption, she wrote, “The first seeds for this short film were planted over ten years ago, and I will never forget the behind-the-scenes moments of the shoot.” “I owe it all [Sadie Sink]Dylan O’Brien, the stunning DP [Rina Yang] And my producers [Saul Germaine]. “
She concluded, “I also want to say thank you to our amazing cast and crew who naturally bring this story to life.” “I loved every second of it and will always remember it. Everyone. Too. We will. Behind-the-scenes footage of the ATW short film is out now!”
Swift has spoken about her directing process before at the Toronto International Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival, where she said she would “love” to continue writing and directing. “I don’t see it being an order of magnitude bigger. I loved making a movie that was very intimate,” she said.
She described her experience on set as a “fulfilling experience”, adding: “I’m a really secretive agent about people not knowing what we’re making. Everything was [discussed using] Symbolic words. I’m so weird.” The short film is also eligible for an Academy Award nomination in 2023 in the Live Action Short Film category.
Swift will appear alongside Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin'”) at the diverseDirectors’ Annual Series Directors to chat more about her film, with the video premiering Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. PT on Variety.com and diverse Social media channels.
