CAA and Anonymous Content Sign “Return to Seoul” Filmmaker Davey Chu

“Return to Seoul” writer and director Davey Chu has signed with CAA and Anonymous Content for representation.

The French-Cambodian director’s latest film Return to Seoul was selected as Cambodia’s official entry in the International Feature Film category at the 2023 Academy Awards and was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best International Film.

Cho wrote and directed the film, which follows Freddie (Park Ji-min), a 25-year-old French woman who returns to Korea, where she was born before she was adopted, for the first time. When she decides to track down her biological parents, her journey takes a surprising turn.

The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it was bought by Sony Pictures Classics (and later retitled from All the People I’ll Never Be). The film has been shown at TIFF, NYFF, and over 60 festivals, including award-winning screenings at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Athens International Film Festival, Hamptons International Film Festival, and Belfast Film Festival.

In her review of diverseIn Exclaim!, Jessica Kiang commended the film for its “boldly choppy storytelling”, noting that it “marks a step up in ambition from the engaging but relatively simple narrative of Chu’s first feature film, ‘Diamond Island’…but while ‘Return to Seoul’ is more focused in its detail, Over the course of about two hours, it builds up the same evocative mood: sad without being languid; bittersweet without the slightest hint of tu.”

The grandson of Cambodian producer Fan Chan made his directorial debut in the 2011 documentary “Golden Slumbers”, which was selected for the Berlinale, followed by the 2014 short film “Cambodia 2099”, which premiered at Directors Week in Cannes. . His first feature film, 2016’s “Diamond Island”, won the Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques (SACD) Prize at the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, as well as awards at the Mumbai International Film Festival, Cinemasia Amsterdam and Namur International Film Festival. festival.

In 2009, Chu co-founded the French production company Vycky Films, and in 2014 he co-founded the Cambodian production company Anti-Archive, both aimed at supporting emerging Cambodian filmmakers. In further support of that mission, Chu also created the Echoes of Tomorrow project, which assists first-time Cambodian female directors with the production of their own short film, and is the founder of the Kon Khmer Kon Khmer Film Group.
