Kelly Giddish Explains Rollins’ Law and Order: SVU Exit: Interview

Brake alert: This story includes discussion of major plot points from the December 8 episode of “Law & Order: SVU” on NBC.

Detective Amanda Rollins wasn’t an easy character to say goodbye to Kelly Giddish. The actress made her final appearance on “Law & Order: SVU” Thursday night, where her character married Carisi (Peter Scanavino) and chose to leave the band for a teaching gig.

Giddish, who joined the series in 2011, announced her exit ahead of the season 24 premiere. diverse She asserted at the time that choosing to leave Dick Wolf was not her choice.

After the final episode, she opened up about the difficult exit, filming her final scenes and the possibility of seeing Rollins again in the future. Read the full Q&A below.

What an amazing final episode. how do you feel today?

There is a final thing that wasn’t there yesterday, so it looks different than it did before I saw it, which I didn’t expect! I said my goodbyes on set. I thought I had that closure. But last night, just look at how many people were watching and all the kind words I got about Rollins and the show, it was something really special.

Rollins has meant a lot to a lot of people. what does it mean to you?

I started playing it in my late 20s, so I’ve played it for three decades of my life, and it’s insane. It’s mad. This is a show like no other. Presentations do not the last 12 years old, let alone playing a character. Playing someone as multifaceted as Rollins, I got to play all sorts of different things — down and out, on top, hilarious, questionable, fearful, triumphant. I have to do the maneuver.

What did you learn from Rollins?

Much. It is possible to grow, and it is possible to be hurt and love again.

Let’s go back a little. Everyone is shocked to hear that you are leaving. Can you share what happened, since you never told your side of things?

Both sides of things is that it’s time in Rollins’ story. I felt like she was headed, and where she was headed last night, it seemed to me the right place to leave her now. I’m so excited about the things that are going on in my personal life and it kind of mirrors what’s going on in my personal life and on Rollins, there’s a lot of joy for you to experience.

When did you know you were leaving?

Before the season starts, this year. We worked on this story together, and I think the last episode was the culmination of Rollins and Benson’s beautiful relationship, and we got to see Caresse and Rollins get married, which was such a treat.

The wedding was very exciting. How did you react when you learned this was happening?

I was so happy, because I was like, “Thank God” — because the fans are going to freak out if they don’t get it! Let’s give it to them.

Kelly Giddish as Detective Amanda Rollins and Mariska Hargitay as Captain Olivia Benson
Peter Kramer/NBC

You and Mariska Hargitay are really close to some really beautiful scenes in the finale. What was it like filming those?

It was very emotional. We had a lot of fun because acting with my girl is just so much fun. There is a lot of trust, and you can play because we know each other so well. Nothing is static, and if you want to try something, the writers are there because they trust Mariska and me to fine-tune the words of the script. It’s so much fun, there are a lot of laughs and there were a lot of tears. It was a really nice experience.

Rollins will appear in the upcoming episode of Organized Crime. What can you tell us about this part?

I don’t know what to tell you about that!

I got a job in New York, so it won’t be far away. She is now married to Carisi, who is still a part of the show. Is the door open for return?

the door is open. The world that Dick Wolf has created with all these shows now – I mean, the crossovers that are happening, the people that are back. Chris Meloni was gone for 12 years and then his character came back. S Ibata [Merkerson] In “Chicago Med”. These characters are so likable and well defined, because you see them day in and day out. We are in people’s living rooms. So the audience loves these characters, they know us. Dick Wolf has such a lush universe going on that people can just pop up in different places. This is really a cool thing to come up with.

Finally, there was a big story in Los Angeles Times Yesterday about showrunner David Graziano. What was your reaction to reading that, and what was your experience with it?

Reading was annoying. I have always had a positive experience with the group in the 12 years I’ve been there.
