The Samsung Galaxy S23 release date is still unknown as we head into the final weeks of 2022. But some details about the possible launch of the first big phones in 2023 are coming into focus.
The latest Galaxy S models usually appear during the first three months of the new year, as Samsung leapfrogged the rest of the competition by launching its latest flagships. For 2023, these numbers will be the Samsung Galaxy S23 lineup, which is expected to introduce three new models. In addition to the standard Galaxy S23, we’re expecting the Galaxy S23 Plus with a larger screen and the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
It is this latest model that introduces the most significant changes to Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup. Early rumors suggest that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature a 200MP main camera and an ultra-bright display. All three S23 models are expected to adapt the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 silicon and offer satellite connectivity similar to a feature Apple added to the iPhone 14 lineup.
There are a lot of details to know about the phones that have yet to be confirmed, and the Galaxy S23 release date is just another piece of information we can glean from the rumor mill. By taking what leakers have claimed about Samsung’s launch plans and combining it with when the phone maker introduced previous Galaxy S models, we can come to a pretty good guess as to the Galaxy S23 release date.
Here’s what we know about when to expect the next Samsung phones.
Samsung Galaxy S23 release date: When previous Galaxy S models arrive
Before we dive into the Galaxy S23 release date rumors, let’s consider when Samsung released previous models of its flagship phone. A quick glance at the calendar confirms that launches generally take place in the first three months of the new year, with Samsung honing in February for the latest launches.
Galaxy S model | Announced date | release date |
Galaxy S22 | February 9, 2022 | February 25, 2022 |
Galaxy S21 | January 14, 2021 | January 29, 2021 |
Galaxy S20 | February 11, 2020 | March 6, 2020 |
Galaxy S10 | February 20, 2019 | March 8, 2019 |
Galaxy S9 | February 25, 2018 | March 16, 2018 |
In four of the past five years, this year’s Galaxy S lineup has arrived in February. The only exception was 2021, when the Galaxy S21 family debuted in mid-January. In fact, Samsung has pushed the launch date forward two years, announcing the Galaxy S22 in early February.
Mobile World Congress, a major trade show for smartphones, is held every year in Barcelona in the last week of February. However, the last time Samsung linked its smartphone launch to MWC was the launch of the Galaxy S9 of 2018. Since then, the phone giant has looked forward to holding launch events of its own, well ahead of MWC.
As for Galaxy S ship dates, we also see that Samsung usually brings its new phones to retail store shelves a little more than two weeks after they’re announced. The longest gap between announcing and launching the phone was the launch of the Galaxy S20 in 2020, and the Galaxy S21 went on sale the fastest after launch.
Samsung Galaxy S23 release date: What the rumors say
With this historical data, there is at least one Galaxy S23 release rumor that we can completely rule out. A leaker posted an image claiming that Samsung will start pre-registration in Korea for its upcoming phone on December 23 with that pre-registration program running until January 5. Not only would it go against Samsung’s recent record of Galaxy S launches, it also presupposes that Samsung will try to generate interest in its new phone over the Christmas holidays. This seems doubtful to us.
Another Galaxy S23 release date rumor pointing to an earlier than usual launch came from ET News, where the Korean publication cited sources that claimed the phone’s launch could happen three weeks before the big reveal of the S22 in 2022. This would set the launch date. Sometime in January, it was reported that Samsung could steal attention away from the iPhone 14 as soon as possible.
A more credible claim refers to business as usual for Samsung’s recent Galaxy S announcement. Korea Joongang Daily cites an unnamed Samsung executive to confirm that the Galaxy S23 will get its reveal at a launch event in early February.
Samsung Galaxy S23 release date: When we think Samsung phones will arrive
When it comes to mobile launch events, past behavior provides a good clue as to what companies might do at their next launch. For this reason, we’re inclined to believe the rumor of an early February announcement of a possible launch date for the Galaxy S23 — at least until a more credible claim emerges with additional evidence.
But if February is the month, what date should we mark in our calendar for Samsung’s next smartphone event? With Presidents’ Day holiday set for February 20th in the US, we were cutting out that week. Valentine’s Day comes the week leading up to it, as February 14th falls on a Tuesday — the favorite day of the week when tech companies tend to hold launch events.
For that reason, we expect the week of February 6 to be the best possible landing sport for the Galaxy Unpacked event, with the Galaxy S23 release date being either Tuesday, February 7 or Wednesday, February 8. —weeks and a change in the shipping pattern of newly announced phones, which would put the Galaxy S23 models on store shelves by February 24.
Of course, this is only an educated guess using current Galaxy S23 release date rumors and our knowledge of previous Samsung product launches. Samsung likely has a different release date in mind for the Galaxy S23 release, and we won’t know it until the phone maker is good and willing to let us know.
