Viaplay orders the first Danish Camino’ from Helmer Birgitte Stærmose

Viaplay, the streaming pioneer in Scandinavia, has ordered its Danish film “Camino,” a heart-warming comedy-drama directed by Birgit Stermos (“The Industry”) and helmed by Lars Bregmann (“Riders of Justice,” “Borgen”) and Danica Korsek (“Man”). chestnut”).

Camino depicts the complex relationship between a father and his daughter who embark on a famous pilgrimage route in Spain. The film is produced by Copenhagen’s Motor Company and will premiere exclusively on Viaplay in 2023.

Directed by Stærmose and Kim Fupz Aakeson (“Becoming Astrid”), the film tells the story of Regitze (Danica Curcic), pregnant in her early 30s, who no longer speaks to her father Jan (Lars Brygmann). But when they discovered that Regitze’s mother’s dying wish was for them to follow the Camino de Santiago together, the two set off on a 260-kilometer journey of discovery under the blazing Spanish sun.

“Many people have children, but everyone has fathers. Processing and dealing with the baggage of our upbringing is part of life,” said Stermos. “That’s why I think Camino is a very universal story that will be relevant for a lot of people.”

The cast is completed by Christian Halken (“Badehotellet”), Catherine Grace Rosenthal (“The Bridge”) and Christian Rubik (“Genius”). The film will be distributed worldwide by Viaplay Content Distribution.

“Camino” is “a moving story of a physical and emotional journey that highlights Danish creativity at its best and has the potential to reach global audiences,” said Philippa Walsttam, Chief Content Officer of Viaplay Group.

The film is produced by Jesper Morthorst and Theis Norgaard at Motor, with Stærmose and Christian Torpe. Executive producers are Marlene Billie Andreasen and Anne Borggaard Sørensen of Viaplay Group. “Camino” is also being produced in collaboration with MP Film Production with support from the Croatian Audiovisual Center’s cash incentive scheme and development support from the Danish Film Institute.

Viaplay will have delivered more than 70 series and films by the end of the year. Upcoming titles include The Åre Murders, a drama series based on the Swedish crime novels of the same name penned by the best-selling author Vivica Stein (“Sandhamn crimes“).
