“everything everywhere at once” and ”

The shortlist voting period concluded on December 16, and the remaining films will move to the official voting period for the first phase, which will take place from January 12 to 17.

Makeup and hair

“All Quiet on the Western Front” (Netflix)
“Amsterdam” (20th Century Studios)
“Babylon” (Paramount Pictures)
“Batman” (Warner Bros.)
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Marvel Studios)
“Blonde” (Netflix)
“Future Crimes” (Neon)
“Elvis” (Warner Bros.)
“Emancipation” (Apple Originals)
“The Pisces” (A24)

Diversity prediction: 5/10

Surprise: David Cronenberg’s Future Crimes is the finest inclusion of the day, acknowledged for its blood and body dismemberment. Poor reviews and box office sales didn’t stop the branch from bringing David O. Russell or Andrew Dominick’s “The Blonde” to the next round of voting. And Antoine Fuqua’s “Emancipation” has found love for its gorgeous visuals, despite the controversy surrounding Will Smith at last year’s gala.

contempt: Daniels’ “everything everywhere at once” multiple transformations across the multiverse don’t seem to spark the imaginations of branch members. Nor were they sufficiently intrigued by the contemporary works of Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” or Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion,” nor the epic styles of Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King.” what a shame.

sound

“All Quiet on the Western Front” (Netflix)
“Avatar: The Way of Water” (20th Century Studios)
“Babylon” (Paramount Pictures)
“Batman” (Warner Bros.)
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Marvel Studios)
“Elvis” (Warner Bros.)
“Everything everywhere at once” (A24)
“Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro” (Netflix)
“Moonage Daydream” (Neon)
“Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount Pictures)

Diversity prediction: 5/10

surprises: Many eyes no doubt widened when Brett Morgan’s documentary “Moonage Daydream” found its way to the love list, along with Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” animated beauty. Damien Chazelle’s “Papillon” wave, while bumpy, still found its way to a slew of nominations.

snubs: The branch has gone through veterans of the “establishment” like seven-time winner Gary Rydstrom (“The Fabelmans”), recent winner Mark Mangini (“Good Night Oppy”) and 21-time nominee Kevin O’Connell (“The Woman King”). Plus there is no love for Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” from sound designers Oliver Tarney and Rachael Tate, who also worked on “Empire of Light.” The music and battle sequences for both “RRR”s were also not able to make the lineup.

visual effects

“All Quiet on the Western Front” (Netflix)
“Avatar: The Way of Water” (20th Century Studios)
“Batman” (Warner Bros.)
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Marvel Studios)
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (Marvel Studios)
“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” (Warner Bros.)
“Jurassic World: Dominion” (Universal Pictures)
“No” (Universal Pictures)
“Thirteen Lives” (Amazon Studios/MGM)
“Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount Pictures)

surprises: By chance, since then diverse I exclusively managed to get the top 20 films advanced to the shortlist from voting, and there aren’t a lot of surprise films in the fold. The German entry “All Quiet on the Western Front” could make Netflix history as the first non-English title to be nominated (if that’s the final slate to be announced on January 24). “Thirteen Lives” Finding love in this space bodes well for other love in other artisan categories such as production design.

snubs: heartbreakers not to include “Everything Everywhere at Once” and “RRR” because they delivered some of the most creative effects of the year. The branch should do better in the future.

original score

“All Quiet on the Western Front” (Netflix) – Volker Bertelmann
“Avatar: The Way of Water” (20th Century Studios) – Simon Franglin
“Babylon” (Paramount Pictures) – Justin Horowitz
“The Banshees of Inisherin” (Spotlight Pictures) – Carter Burwell
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Marvel Studios) – Ludwig Göransson
“Dedication” (Sony Pictures) – Chanda Dhansi
“Don’t Worry Baby” (Warner Bros.) – John Powell
“Everything is everywhere at once” (A24) – Son Lux
“The Fabelmans” (Universal Pictures) – John Williams
“The Glass Onion: Knives Out Mystery” (Netflix) – Nathan Johnson
“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (Netflix) – Alexandre Desplat
“No” (Universal Pictures) – Michael Abels
“She Said” (Universal Pictures) – Nicholas Britel
“The Woman King” (Sony Pictures) – Terrence Blanchard
“Women Speak” (MGM / United Artists Releasing) – Hildur Gunadottir

surprisesTwo women included in the lineup are particularly encouraging with Chanda Dancy’s “Devotion,” which could be the first black woman ever to be nominated in the category, and Hildur Gunadottir’s Oscar-winning film “Women Talking,” which would be the first woman to win an award. class twice.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” confirmed itself as a #1 contender for the Netflix Awards with this full-length shortlist announcement, proving Volker Bertelmann’s impressive score. Nathan Johnson, cousin to writer-director Ryan, has to get them excited about the prospects of moving forward with “Glass Onion.”

The composers also “branched” to include names we suspected would convey such as Son Lux’s “Everything Everywhere” and Michael Abels’ “No.”

snubs: If someone could take the time later today to explain how to listen to Michael Giacchino’s score for “The Batman” and not automatically check it out for a nod, that would be great. Ditto for the beautiful ‘live’ music of Emilie Levinez-Frosh and the delightful ‘RRR’ MM Keravani Orchestra. It also seems like “A Man Called Otto” may be too late for the party for the still Oscar-less Thomas Newman.

original song

Time from Amsterdam (20th Century Studios)
“Nothing’s Lost (Give Me Strength)” from “Avatar: The Way of Water” (20th Century Studios)
“Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Marvel Studios)
“This is Life” from “Everything Everywhere at Once” (A24)
“Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (Netflix)
“Til You Home” from “A Man Called Otto” (Sony Pictures)
“Naatu Naatu” from “RRR” (Contrast Films)
“My Mind & Me” from “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me” (Apple Original Films)
“Good After Night” from “Spirited” (Apple Original Films)
“Applause” from “Tell it Like a Woman” (Samuel Goldwyn Films)
“Stand Up” from “Till” (Orion/United Artists Releasing)
Song “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount Pictures)
“Dust and Ash” from “The Voice of Dust and Ash” (Matilda Productions)
“Carolina” from “Where the Crawdads Sing” (Sony Pictures)
“New Body Rhumba” from “White Noise” (Netflix)

surprises: The big music stars are here to help with the ratings if the Academy feels inclined to rely on them. We’ve got Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Drake, Jasmine Sullivan, and Selena Gomez with creative picks like the team behind RRR’s “Nato-Nato.”

I thought “Do a Little Good” was a installment of the Apple musical “Spirited,” but they chose “Good After Night” to include Academy Award winners Pasek and Paul. Never count on Diane Warren. never.

snubs: There were some big names in music that stopped by like last year’s winners Billie Eilish and Phineas (“Nobody Like U” from “Turning Red”) and Joe Jonas (“Not Alone” from “Devotion”). I wish I’d seen Billy Eichner collaborate with Marc Shaiman on the song “Love is Not Love” from the movie Bros.

documentary film

“All That Breath” (HBO documentaries/Sideshow)
“All Beauty and Bloodshed” (Neon)
“Bad Axe” (IFC Films)
“Children of the Mist” (CAT & Docs)
“The Descendent” (Netflix)
“Fire of Love” (National Geographic/Neon Documentaries)
“Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, Journey, Song” (Sony Pictures Classics)
Hidden Messages (shipping and releasing film)
“House Made of Fragments” (Madman Entertainment)
“The Janes” (HBO documentaries)
“Last Trip Home” (MTV documentaries)
“Moonage Daydream” (Neon)
“Navalny” (CNN/Warner Bros.)
“Retro” (National Geographic Films)
“Territory” (National Geographic Documentary)

surprises“Children of the Mists” surprised many while “Hidden Letters” is a fun entry. It’s great to see Brett Morgan’s “Moonage Daydream” get recognition, especially after he passed away so much in the past.

snubs: This is where the murders took place today. Where’s “Good Night Oppy”? The most problematic branch, given its unwillingness to allow others to vote outside of the branch itself, continues its seemingly annual slaughter of top-tier competitors. There was also no love for Hulu’s “Aftershock” and Apple’s “Louse Armstrong’s Black & Blue,” which many expected. Now, Robert Downey Jr. won’t be an Oscar winner (or nominee) this year with his animated, self-portrait of his father, “Dad.” Failed to make the cut.

international advantage

“All Quiet on the Western Front” (Germany)
“Argentina, 1985” (Argentina)
“Bardo, a pseudo-chronicle of a handful of truths” (Mexico)
“The Cairo Conspiracy” (Sweden)
“The Blue Caftan” (Morocco)
Close (Belgium)
Corsage (Austria)
Decision to Leave (South Korea)
“EO” (Poland)
“Holly Spider” (Denmark)
Joyland (Pakistan)
Last Film Show (India)
“The Quiet Girl” (Ireland)
“Back to Seoul” (Cambodia)
“Saint Omer” (France)

surprises: Believe it or not, there is none, and this is the surprise. I was tracking the only two films I failed to anticipate shortlisting — Sweden’s “Cairo Conspiracy” and Morocco’s “The Blue Caftan” — on the international future charts at No. 17 and No. 22.

Snubs: The two highs that were rising near the end – Ukraine’s “Klondike” and Norway’s “Sailor of War” were notable as were Hong Kong’s “Where the Wind Blows” and Spain’s “Alcarràs”.
