Ridley Scott: Napoleon was rewritten to make Joaquin Phoenix comfortable

When working with Joaquin Phoenix, prepare to be rewritten. Ridley Scott revealed to Empire magazine This led to the entire script being rewritten to make the actor more comfortable. Phoenix, reunited with Scott after “Gladiator,” stars in “Napoleon” opposite Vanessa Kirby and Tahir Rahim.

“Joaquin is about as far from traditional as you can get,” Scott said. “Not on purpose, but out of a hunch. It’s what makes him tick. If something bothers him, he’ll let you know. Made [‘Napoleon’] Especially by constant questioning.”

“With Joaquin, we can rewrite the damn movie because it’s uncomfortable. And that kind of happened with Napoleon, ”continued the director. “We unpicked the movie to help it focus on who Bonaparte was. I had to respect that, because what was said was incredibly constructive. It just made it all grow bigger and better.”

The screenplay for “Napoleon” was written by David Scarpa, who also wrote the screenplay for “All the Money in the World,” which Scott directed. The story focuses on the French Emperor through the lens of his relationship with his first wife, Empress Josephine. While Scott “The Last Duel” star Jodie Comer was originally tapped to play Joséphine, scheduling conflicts forced a cast swap and Kirby took over, Oscar nominee “Pieces of a Woman.”

“Napoleon is a man I have always been fascinated with,” Scott he said when Apple stepped into the movie last year. “He came out of nowhere to rule everything—but all the while he was waging romantic warfare with his adulterous wife Josephine. He conquered the world trying to win her love, and when he couldn’t, he conquered her to destroy her, destroying himself in the process.”

Apple is expected to release “Napoleon” in 2023.
