Oscar Predictions 2023: Best Live Action Short Film

Comment on the categoryA: The big takeaway from the Oscars shortlist announcement was that the entire lineup didn’t contain any American titles. All of the films except for Tom Berkeley and Ross White’s “An Irish Goodbye” are not in English, which could be an advantage for the move toward Oscar nomination voting starting Jan. 12.

The increase in non-English titles should not be interpreted as a “bad thing” because we constantly encourage Academy members to seek more non-traditional and international titles. However, this may point to another example of how the increase in the number of international voters can be incredibly impactful.

It could also mean that two music superstars — Taylor Swift (“All Too Well”) and Kendrick Lamar (“We Cry Together”) — have been removed from the shortlist.

The most famous name in discussion is four-time Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuaron, who produced the Disney movie “Le Pupille” from writer-director Alice Rohrwasher. Making stops at the Cannes, Telluride, and Toronto Film Festivals, the film could garner the most buzz to get it to the finish line.

Criterion has achieved great flexibility in the short film categories, most notably with Dania Bdeir’s “The Workshop”, the story of a Beirut crane worker living his secret passion.

They’ll be even more of a buzz to behold when people start watching them over the holiday break.
