Barack Obama’s favorite songs of 2022 include Bad Bunny, SZA, and Zach Bryan

Following his posts on what he’s got from the worlds of movies and books this year, former President Barack Obama followed through on Thursday with a list of his 25 favorite songs of 2022, reaching for some of the favorites shared by much of America — “About Damn” by Lizzo Possibly. Time” and Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” are wasted conclusions—along with some of the more obscure works that would drive Google even among dedicated music fans.

“I always enjoy sharing my end-of-year music playlist with all of you — and this year we’ve heard so many great songs. Here are some of my favorites (adding, in a truly collegial Eric Alper-interactive fashion, “Is there any Songs or artists I should review?”).

Obama’s slate features some of the year’s biggest releases in judiciously disparate genres, including Latin music for Bad Bunny, with his hit “Titi Me Pregunto,” and country, with new hit artist Zack Bryan and smashing lefties. “Something in an orange.”

There isn’t a great deal of overlap between Obama’s picks and the top Grammy nominees, though three of the year’s record-breaking nominees made the former president’s list: “Break My Soul,” “About Damn Time” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Heart Part 5.” “

Grammy-nominated Best New Artist Omar Apollo entered Obama’s list with “Tamaoatchi.” Latin music favorite Rosalía, who topped many critics’ year-end charts despite being a lower-than-expected presence at the Grammy nods, earned Obama recognition for her song “Saoko.”

Sometimes he went with the second biggest hit for an artist, as when he preferred Steve Lacy’s “Sunshine” (featuring Foushee) to Lacy’s biggest smash, “Bad Habit.”

In the case of Ethel Cain and the American Teenager, he picked an artist who garnered some critical acclaim for her debut album, The Preacher’s Daughter, which deals with heavy subjects like religion and domestic violence, but their songs weren’t. planned at all. Since Cain didn’t make enough of an impression to appear in many pundits’ polls, Obama’s statement could give her a significant boost in visibility. Haitian-American artist Leila Makala, who is a member of Our Native Daughters, can also count on getting more attention for her little-heard solo album. Archive Sudan’s “Home Maker” might be considered an almost unpredictable pick, though, rather than chart positions, her album was at least well represented on critics’ year-end lists.

SZA’s “Shirt” is a very trendy pick, from the album that became a best-seller upon its release in mid-December, even though the song itself has been out since October.

Obama is also publishing a summer playlist, which includes both topical hits and oldies, but only half a dozen artists he included in his mid-year favorites made it to the end of 2022 tour (sorry, Wet Leg and Harry Styles).

As always, music fans will marvel at his taste, while wondering how he comes across with all of his picks. one typical asked Loudspeaker “Do you guys think Obama is actually Maggie Rogers Stan or is she one of the interns they train for every year?”
