10 Unrecognized Artists Get Their Right in 2022 – ARTnews.com

The Venice Biennale is usually a place to go to find up-and-coming artists on the verge of hitting it big, but this year’s edition made headlines for another reason: the unusual makeup of the artists’ roster.

Almost 90 percent of the people included in the main show were women or gender non-conforming. In addition, approximately 95 of the 213 surviving artists are no longer there; Maria Sibylla Merian, the first born of them, died in 1717.

While there were also emerging artists to be seen, the Biennale was of great help to artists whose work had gained long overdue recognition.

Artists like these are often called “rediscovery,” but as this Biennale has pointed out, this label is often incorrect, as many of the dead artists found here were well connected during their day and were part of famous avant-gardes such as Surrealism and Dada. Whatever their stature really, these artists are an example of unrecognized talent getting what it deserves and confirmation that the trend, which can be seen in institutions around the world, is very much alive.

Here’s a look at 10 little-known artists who got their due this year.
