Predictions, rumors, and what we want to see next

Samsung had a much more low-key 2022. It felt like Samsung focused more on improving its products rather than introducing us to innovations. The Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22 Plus, and even the new foldable devices were all very similar to their previous-generation counterparts. However, if Samsung’s 2022 review is any indication, we can expect big things from the South Korean giant in 2023.

I expect more from what we’ve already seen, but it doesn’t hurt to cross our fingers for some surprises, right? So here’s what I think Samsung’s 2023 phone will look like, from most likely to least likely.

Samsung will be all in with foldable devices

A top-down view of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Fold 2, partially folded

Having used both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, I can say with confidence that they are almost there. Yes, they are in many ways similar to their predecessors, but that doesn’t make them bad phones. By playing it small and safe with its upgrades this year, I think Samsung has set itself up for a big release in 2023.

It’s too early to scout corners of the internet for leaks and rumors, so your guess is as good as mine as to what to expect. However, we can make some educated guesses and see what Samsung’s foldable devices will look like in 2023.

Samsung will likely keep the form factors, as it has recently tweaked the dimensions to make them even better. So, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 (or whatever they’re called) could look a lot like current-generation foldable phones.

There are many other changes we can hope for. Current foldable devices have strong, sturdy hinges, but it would be nice if Samsung figured out a way to reduce the crease in the middle of the screen where it folds. It looks ugly compared to foldable devices from other manufacturers including OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi. I also expect the upcoming Galaxy foldable devices to have better cameras. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 aren’t bad shooters, but they’re nowhere near as bad as anywhere else on the market. Finally, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold smartphone should come with an S Pen, just like the Galaxy S22 Ultra, with a slot for the stylus.

Since we are talking about expectations, 2023 could also be the year when Samsung will push the boundaries and go beyond mere folds. The first thing that came to my mind was the 17-inch slide-in PC prototype shown off at the Intel Innovation Day 2022 event. I probably wouldn’t buy one for the same reasons I would never buy a first-gen product, but there was a lot of buzz around this after Samsung Display CEO JS Choi revealed the device.

There’s a better chance we’ll see a Galaxy Book foldable laptop next year than a regular foldable laptop, but I’ll keep the door open.

Samsung Galaxy S23 series: more of the same

You may have already seen dozens of leaked renders of the Galaxy S23 devices. If not, all you need to know is that the upcoming Galaxy S23 series phones are very similar to the current generation of flagship phones with glass panels. Barring a few visual differences to make it easy to tell them apart, I don’t think Samsung went back to the drawing board to design the Galaxy S23.

We’re still seeing some noteworthy internal improvements, but don’t expect the new phones to be all that different. In fact, you could probably buy a Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S22 Plus now over the holidays for a cheaper price and have it set for another year. On the other hand, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is expected to see some bigger improvements, especially on the front camera.

Regardless, the three phones will likely top our best smartphone list and play a huge role in shaping Samsung 2023.

New Galaxy Buds, watches, and tablets

The current-gen Galaxy tablets, watches, and Galaxy Buds are already great in almost every way, but that won’t stop Samsung from launching a successor in 2023. I don’t have a huge list of expectations for these three products, but there are a few ways Samsung can during which it is improved.

The Galaxy Watch and the earphones, in particular, could use a few more improvements in addition to the annual spec bump. The Galaxy Watch 5, for example, could use a larger battery, while the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro should be available in a slightly smaller size. Both watches could also use features that can make better use of the temperature sensor. While we’re at it, Samsung should somehow bring back the rotating bezels from the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic because the now-used touch-sensitive bezel feels wonky in comparison.

Likewise, successors to the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro could use some improvements. For starters, Samsung could add multipoint Bluetooth support, which is a common feature that’s already available on a host of other earphones and comes in handy when using more than one device. I’d also like to see Samsung unlock some of their exclusive features and allow them to work with non-Samsung phones. For example, 24-bit audio support on the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro earbuds is limited to Samsung phones only. Notably, Galaxy smartwatches also perform better when paired with Samsung phones.

Distinguished presence at CES

Whether it’s a custom four-door refrigerator or the gorgeous Odyssey Ark display, Samsung has always been a major player at CES. We can’t quite predict how Samsung will feature at CES this year, but expect to see more mainstream products instead. to me JH Han, CEO of Samsung’s Hardware Experience DivisionSamsung’s theme for CES 2023 will be “Bringing Quiet to Our Connected World,” which just screams “connected smart home devices.” The post promises more improved SmartThings experiences powered by AI and more green initiatives.

Samsung’s SmartThings is also now Matter certified, which means we could also see a new wave of Matter-enabled smart home hubs and devices at CES 2023. The issue is still in its infancy, but it’s gained a lot of support, and Samsung is one of the main companies involved. .

Samsung folds at a cheaper price

Part of me wants Samsung to launch a “Pro” or “Ultra” version of the foldable Galaxy Z Fold, to deliver a beast of a foldable phone. We’ve yet to see a 10/10 foldable ever from any manufacturer, and there’s definitely a market for that, albeit a niche one. I wouldn’t put my money down seeing the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra in 2023, but I’m still optimistic about the “Fan Edition” Galaxy Z Flip I wrote about a couple of months ago.

We’re likely to see a cheaper foldable device considering the top-tier Galaxy Z Fold 4 is already out of reach for most thanks to its impressive $1,800 price tag. Samsung could take advantage of a larger market — one where there’s no competition — by launching a relatively cheaper entry-level device. I can think of a few ways to make these foldables cheaper, but I’ve settled on the theoretical Galaxy Z Flip Fan Edition (FE) because it’s more realistic. Cut right angles as it has already done many times with other FE phones, and Samsung really has the ability to make foldable devices more accessible. It’s been a few years since Samsung started selling foldable devices to the mainstream market, and I think 2023 is the year it goes even further.

The return of Exynos processors?

Rumor has it that we’re not getting an Exynos variant of the Galaxy S23 devices this year, which is good news for Galaxy S series phones because Exynos processors are notorious for low performance and throttling issues. Not to mention, Qualcomm is also a bigger and better player in wireless technology, and its chipset is more efficient with wireless connectivity.

But does this mean that this is the end of the Exynos-powered Galaxy smartphone series? Probably not, given that Samsung is already delving into the range 3nm GAAFET node production. We may not see a new Exynos chip for the Galaxy flagship devices, but we may get a situation update, which indicates a possible return down the line.

This also raises more questions about Samsung’s partnership with AMD. In short, we likely won’t see Exynos chips in action in terms of flagship devices for 2023. I’m willing to absorb rumors about keeping the Exynos lineup alive for cars and infotainment systems. we will see.

New laptops and 8K TVs?

Samsung has been doing pretty well with its Galaxy Book 2 laptops, so its 2023 laptops are definitely on your list of things to watch. There are many ways Samsung is using to improve its laptops, but I’m most interested to see if the company will explore new form factors. I’ve already touched on this a bit in one of the previous sections, but Samsung’s version of the foldable laptop will look and feel a lot better than a lot of the options out there. It likely isn’t on the company’s priority list, so we may end up getting upgraded Galaxy Book laptops with new chipsets and other upgrades on a yearly basis.

I’m also excited to see what kind of TVs Samsung has in store next year. Will we finally see more mainstream models of the company’s 8K TVs, or will we see more foldable or foldable TVs like the ones you may have seen from LG? Samsung is likely to release updated models of all of its TVs, as well as bring to market a premium unit.

I expect Samsung to refresh its 8K TV lineup alongside its more popular Lifestyle range, but I doubt we’ll see 8K become more mainstream just yet. We’re looking at very diminishing returns from pushing more pixels, but that’s a topic for a different post. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to see what kind of TV Samsung has in store for us because CES is just around the corner.

Samsung in 2023 and beyond

All things considered, we’re looking forward to another full calendar year for Samsung in 2023. It’s mostly a big guessing game with predictions, especially when you’re dealing with a big name like Samsung with multiple branches spread across different categories, but I think we’ve covered it all exciting stuff. Let’s hope Samsung has planned surprises for us throughout the year, so we can have a more interesting year-end roundup later in December 2023.

If you want to check out Apple’s predictions or want to know what Google’s 2023 is expected to look like, be sure to read articles from my colleagues who detail all the surprising product and service changes expected from other manufacturers. We also have one for Microsoft as well that we expected, you know, more Surface laptops.
