Do Apple AirPods work with Android? How to pair them

Apple AirPods are great TWS solutions, but you might be wondering if you can use them with Android phones. Here’s what you need to know about it.

Like most of its products, Apple wasn’t the first company to release truly wireless earbuds. But when the AirPods launched, they immediately made a place for themselves, and now Apple completely dominates the premium wireless earphone market. Naturally, many people are considering buying AirPods, including Android users, which leads to the question – do Apple AirPods work with Android smartphones? The short answer to this question is yes, AirPods work with Android devices.

AirPods are not exclusive earphones for iOS. TWS earbuds can work with any Bluetooth enabled device. If you don’t want to give up your Android phone just to enjoy your AirPods, you don’t have to. But as you’d expect, you’ll be missing out on some AirPods features iPhone users enjoy, like the battery indicator and access to Siri. However, there are workarounds to restore at least two of these features.

One such solution is to install an app like Auxiliary operator from the Google Play Store. It shows the AirPods battery level, and allows you to activate the Google Assistant by tapping or holding the AirPods. There’s a Pro version of the app too that claims to add support for in-ear AirPods detection, but if the Google Play Store reviews are any indication, it doesn’t seem to work for everyone.

In general, AirPods and Android devices are a funky match, but if you want to, you can make it work.

How to pair AirPods with your Android phone

Unlike an iPhone, which can be paired as soon as you open the AirPods case, Android users will have to go to the Bluetooth settings to connect to the AirPods.

  1. On your Android phone, swipe down from the top to open a file quick settings Team.
  2. Long press on a file bluetooth Icon to open Bluetooth settings. Alternatively, you can go to the Bluetooth settings via settings program.
  3. Once you are in the Bluetooth settings, you will see an option like Pair a new device. Click on it. If you don’t see such an option, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on and wait for the AirPods to appear below it Available devices.
  4. Open the lid of the AirPods charging case with the AirPods inside, and press and hold the button on the back of the case until the light starts flashing white. If you are using AirPods Max, take them out of the smart case, press and hold Noise control button until the light on the right earcup starts flashing white.
  5. Your phone will now detect your AirPods and show them underneath Available devices. Tap on it and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the pairing process.
  6. You can now use them like any other TWS earbuds.

You can install the Assistant Trigger app we mentioned earlier, to see the battery level and link Google Assistant to trigger when you tap or press the AirPods stem. If you want to customize the AirPods controls, you can borrow a friend or family member’s iPhone and use that to customize them. These customizations will continue to be available on your AirPods even after you separate them from your iPhone. And while you can’t control the ANC on your AirPods Pro or Max with your Android phone by default, you can still count on the dedicated noise control buttons on the AirPods themselves.
