Box Office: ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ takes $1.17 billion worldwide

Avatar: The Way of Water continues to dominate the box office this holiday season.

James Cameron’s epic adventure has now reached $1.17 billion worldwide, becoming the third-highest-grossing film of the pandemic era, behind Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $1.9 billion and Top Gun: Maverick’s $1.5 billion.

On Wednesday, “Avatar: The Way of Water” grossed $20 million domestically, bringing its US revenue to $358 million. It added $47.9 million to the bet from the international markets. This brings its total foreign income to $810.6 million. It now ranks as the year’s highest-grossing international release.

But the Avatar sequel has a high price tag. Cameron suggested that, in order to break even, “Avatar: The Way of Water” would have to be one of the highest-grossing films in history. Sources close to the production claim it was somewhat hyperbolic and set a break-even figure near $1.4 billion – a milestone the sequel has a good chance of achieving.
