Oh, resumes. If ever there was a genre that says “a taste of the Oscars,” it’s this one. Whether it’s one of Forest Whitaker’s best performances playing Eddie Amin, or Renee Zellweger’s transformation into Judy Garland, biopics are usually a surefire way to generate Oscar buzz.
The same rationale doesn’t seem to apply to rap biopics, as if we get movies about Biggie and 2Pac, with the movies being Has bad reputation And the All eyes on merespectively, as well as the NWA movie, Straight from ComptonNone of the actors or actresses involved in those films were nominated for their performances.
Now, you could argue that none of these shows were comparable to, say, Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles, or Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, and I wouldn’t necessarily argue with you. However, with Snoop Dogg getting his resume, it got me thinking of five rap bios I’d like to see made. And maybe, just maybe, if Hollywood runs out with any of these resumes, we might see one of these actors out there on stage one day thanking the Academy for awarding them their performance.
Jay Z
H to the Izzo, aka Shawn Carter, would have a really interesting life story, mostly due to the massive amount of hustle to get him to where he is today. His classic debut album Reasonable doubtwhich debuted when the artist was 26 years old (which is pretty old in the rap world), and was preceded by — you probably guessed it if you listen to his music — years of drug dealing.
But, what I’d really like to see is a movie that features Jay-Z at the height of his fame. I’m talking about the formation of Roc-A-Fella Records, his verbal beef with Nas (which, I’m sorry Nas fans, Jay won), and even his marriage to Beyoncé. And you want drama? What if we actually got into Jay cheating on Queen B? I mean, honestly, forget who gets to play Jay-Z. This can be segmented later. what am I Is that true Want to know who will play the 40-year-old Beyoncé? Because you know not everyone can play it. Absolute monarchy requires only the best.
Beastie Boys
Well, there was actually a really good Beastie Boys movie called Beastie Boys story. But, that was a Spike Jonze documentary. That said, while it’s good, I’d really like to see the actors play the Beastie Boys, as the documentary really showed how the three friends (Adam Yauch was only in on it through archive footage because he passed away in 2012), got together and evolved on Years passed.
If anything, I might want to see a movie about the Beastie Boys’ early years when they were more of a punk band struggling to eventually find their rap identity. I love, love, love a lot of the later Beastie Boys albums, like hello wickedAnd the to 5 regionsAnd the Hot Sauce Committee Part Twobut I’d really like to see a resume that might end up with a release disease licensed. Because sometimes I prefer biographies that focus more on key events (eg movie Peaceful) rather than being a complete life story.
Queen Latifah
Although she wasn’t the first female rapper to burst onto the scene (MC Lyte would take that title with 1988’s Lyte as a rock, making her the first female rap artist to release a solo rap album), Newark’s own Queen Latifah may have been the first to become a hit with the general public. But, unlike the Beastie Boys, I’d really like to see her full life story, from her winning boxing days, all the way to her acting career. equalizer.
However, what’s really cool about Queen Latifah’s biography is that it can showcase all the waves she made with her explosive introduction to the world of rap, as well as all the artists she influenced and who followed after her. And here’s the best part — I want Queen Latifah to play her. I mean, look. If Eminem could basically play his life story 8 milesI don’t see why Queen Latifah – who’s nominated for an Academy Award – can’t play herself in her biopic.
MF DOOM
When my favorite rapper, MF DOOM, passed away, it hit me hard. And apparently, I wasn’t alone, as many people paid tribute to the late rapper, who passed away at the age of 49. And the thing is, MF DOOM had a very tragic life, losing both a brother and a son, and neither of them ever truly recovered from.
That said, I think there’s a lot to be said for a guy who continues to wear a mask (with pride) and declare himself a supervillain, going so far as not to attend some of his concerts and instead Send DOOM Imposters. I’d really like to see a movie about why Daniel Doomle (who even had a name homonymous as a comic book character) decided to take on the DOOM identity in the first place. Honestly, I just want to hear “Rapp Snitch Knishes” on the big screen, and maybe finally learn who Mr. Fantastik is.
Cole Keith
Last but not least, I want a Biography of Cole Keith. Now, if you don’t know who Kool Keith is, I don’t totally blame you, because the rapper may have had more identity changes than any other rapper in history. He started out in the rap group The Ultramagnetic MCs, but has continued his solo career, appearing first as Dr. Octagon, then became Dr. Dooom (where he killed Dr. Octagon), then Black Elvis, and then… You know, I have no idea who Cole Keith is at the moment. The man has built his career on being an enigma.
Having said that, I’d like a vague bio to go along with the rapper’s quirky career. something along the lines of a bob dylan movie, I’m not there, in which different actors play different aspects of the same musician. Because if any rapper deserves an outlandish biopic, it’s Kool Keith.
Which rappers would you love to see get a resume? For more news about the upcoming rapper’s bios, be sure to swing by here often.
