Several reports have indicated that the iPhone 14 Plus, like the mini before it, is struggling in terms of sales. Now a new article from the Korean blog Navier (Opens in a new tab)the first to be spotted Mac rumors (Opens in a new tab)shows the possible solutions that Apple is studying for the iPhone 15 release in the fall of 2023.
Before we get into the details, it’s worth defining what many observers believe is the main problem: the limited value associated with the non-Pro iPhone 14 models that came out in 2022.
The iPhone 14 Plus is basically the larger screen iPhone 14 with a longer battery life. And as the comparison between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 shows, there are minimal upgrades from this old phone.
Alternatively, for $200 more than the Plus model, you can buy the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which not only comes with the same screen size but also includes Dynamic Island, always-on display support, a 120Hz display, and an additional rear camera with a much higher resolution and optical zoom, And the A16 chipset is faster and more.
With Apple still releasing the second-generation iPhone mini long after its soft sales performance was evident, it’s safe to assume that plans are very long in coming to cancel the theoretical iPhone 15 Plus. So what are Apple’s options to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself?
iPhone 15 Plus: Apple options
The Naver post claims that there are three treatments that Apple is evaluating. The first is to reduce the differences between the professional and non-professional iPhones, and we’ve already heard that Dynamic Island will appear across all phones in 2023, reducing the aesthetic differences. There is talk of the 48MP camera coming to cheaper iPhone models as well.
The second option is to lower the price of the iPhone 15 Plus. This isn’t something Apple would be particularly happy about, but it will undoubtedly make the phone more attractive. The only problem with that is that a $100 price cut would make the Plus model the same price as the regular iPhone, which means the regular iPhone 15 would need a similar cut — and that might be a lot for Apple to swallow.
Finally, there is mention of making the iPhone 15 Pro Max more premium (and therefore expensive) which will have the indirect effect of making the cheaper iPhone with a large screen more attractive in comparison. This is basically a long-running iPhone 15 Ultra rumor without the U-word, though the translation is a bit fuzzy here.
A look at the iPhone 15 Plus
Which way will Apple take next fall? It’s pure speculation, but it looks like a combination of all three could spur Plus sales in 2023. With a premium Ultra phone pushing prices up on the flagship end, a modest $50 price cut for a product that inherits a bunch of 2022 Pro features could make all the difference.
If not, Apple may have to consider that the number of different iPhones available becomes an issue. Maybe it’s time to consider reducing the number of iPhones to just three a year.
