How to use an Amazon Fire tablet as an Echo Show

With Display Mode on your Fire tablet, you can turn it into a smart home hub with full Alexa voice controls. Here’s how to use it.


Amazon’s Fire tablets are powerful entry-level devices for doing things like watching movies, reading books, and playing games. But did you know they can also double the width of the Echo?


If you own an 8-inch or 10-inch tablet, there’s a feature called Projection Mode that can turn your tablet into an Alexa-controlled smart home display, eliminating the need to go out and buy a separate Echo Show.

But here’s a question: How do you enable it? In this guide, we’ll show you how to turn it on, what devices are supported, and what you can do with it once it’s enabled.


What is the display mode?

Show Mode, originally released in 2018 as a free software update, lets you use your Fire tablet as if you were using an Echo Show. With Alexa, you can ask it questions, play content, or control smart home devices with your voice just like you would on an Echo Show without having to go out and buy one. Amazon launched the feature with a Show Mode Charging Dock that gives you a place to keep your Fire tablet while using Show Mode, but it’s not necessary to use the feature.

Which Fire Tablets Support Display Mode?

Before jumping down the rabbit hole of trying to find display mode on your Fire tablet, you’ll want to check to make sure your tablet is supported. Amazon currently lists seven different Fire TV devices as supported by Show Mode.

The list includes:

  • Fire HD 8 (7th generation) with software version 5.6.1.0 or later
  • Fire HD 10 (7th generation) with software version 5.5.0.0 or later
  • Fire HD 8 (8th generation) with software version 6.3.0.1 or later
  • Fire HD 10 (9th generation) with software version 7.3.1.1 or later
  • Fire HD 8 (10th Gen) with software version 7.3.1.4 or later
  • Fire HD 10 (11th generation) with software version 7.3.1.8 or later
  • Fire HD 8 (12th generation)

If your tablet isn’t on the list, you’re out of luck. But if He is Listed, let’s move on.

How to enable display mode on Fire tablets

There are three ways to enable Show Mode on your Fire tablet

First method: Use Alexa

  1. On the Fire tablet, say Alexa, switch to Show Mode. The interface will then scroll and you will be greeted by Show Mode.
  2. To exit demo mode, say Alexa, exit Show Mode.

Method 2: Use the Shortcut in Quick Settings

  1. On a Fire tablet, swipe down from the top of the screen twice to reveal the Quick Settings panel.
  2. In the Settings menu, there is a toggle called view mode. Tap on it, and the display mode will come to life.
  3. To exit view mode, do the same double-swipe gesture and tap File view mode Switch again.

Third method: Use Show Mode Charging Dock

If you own Amazon’s optional Show Mode Charging Dock for your Fire tablet, you can enable a feature that will automatically switch to Show Mode every time you dock your tablet.

  1. go to the settings The app on your Fire tablet.
  2. find view mode section, then click on it.
  3. Find Auto mode switch and turn it on.

Once you’re done, all you have to do is dock your Fire tablet when you want to use display mode and it will switch automatically, no extra steps required.

What can you do with demo mode on Fire tablets?

After enabling Show Mode on your Fire tablet, you’ll notice that it’s very familiar to other smart home displays. That’s just because — Amazon took its Echo Show interface and bundled it into a separate experience for Fire Tablet users.

This means you can do everything you can with Alexa on a traditional Echo Show like ask about the weather, sports scores, use skills, play music, watch something on YouTube or Prime Video, and more. Each answer is greeted with rich visuals to show you more information, and you can customize what is shown and what isn’t in the Settings app.

Show Mode also allows you to make calls with Alexa, control your smart home devices with your voice, and follow along with cooking lessons.

Of course, the experience is not a 1:1 comparison with the Echo Show. Fire tablets don’t have the same dynamic microphones as Amazon Echo devices, and they don’t produce the same sound quality. Demo mode can also feel a little slow compared to regular Echo Shows depending on your internet connection and what kind of Fire device you have. However, it is a useful feature if you don’t want to shell out extra money to buy a smart home screen.
