It’s never too early to start speculating on the iPhone 15 release date, even if we’re not far from the latest Apple phone. The start of the new year will kick off the annual guessing game about the exact date of when the next round of smartphones from Apple will arrive.
You can understand the desire to set an iPhone 15 release date. Even if you have no intention of buying a phone from Apple, the new iPhones tend to set the tone for the rest of the smartphone market. Everyone is interested to see what new features Apple offers — or doesn’t. And on a practical level, the iPhone launch schedule can give us a glimpse into whether global supply chains are up and running.
This year, the iPhone 15 numbers introduce a lot of new capabilities. From the potential move to USB-C over Lightning and the possible addition of a periscope-style telephoto lens on some models, we’re already hearing a lot about the company’s reported plans for the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and possibly the new iPhone 15 Ultra.
iPhone 15 release date? We haven’t heard much about it, though those numbers will change later in the year and closer to the expected fall release.
But we don’t have to wait for the rumors to circulate to start speculating on the iPhone 15 release date. Apple has enough of a track record with phone releases that we can make a guess as to what range of dates the iPhone 15 might arrive. We can then adjust this prediction as more rumors emerge about the date. Release throughout the year.
Here’s our best guess right now about the iPhone 15 release date, based on Apple’s recent past with iPhone launches.
iPhone 15 release date: When previous iPhones were launched
This will be the 17th year that Apple has released a smartphone, so we have some long history to draw from when it comes to determining the iPhone release date. All the way back in 2007, Apple previewed the original iPhone in January before launching the device in June. But in 2014, Apple’s release window changed, as iPhones started coming out in the fall. (The exception, of course, is the iPhone SE models, which saw spring releases for all three iterations.)
Here’s a look at the last eight years of major iPhone releases, going back to the debut of the iPhone 6s series in 2015. In addition to Apple’s release date for each iPhone announcement, we’ve also included actual release dates—this is the key distinction because sometimes Apple releases their iPhones.
Phone | Announcement date | release date |
iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max | September 7, 2022 | September 16, 2022 |
iPhone 14 Plus | September 7, 2022 | October 7, 2022 |
iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max | September 14, 2021 | September 24, 2021 |
iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro | October 13, 2020 | October 23, 2020 |
iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max | October 13, 2020 | November 13, 2020 |
iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max | September 10, 2019 | September 20, 2019 |
iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max | September 12, 2018 | September 21, 2018 |
iPhone XR | September 12, 2018 | October 26, 2018 |
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus | September 12, 2017 | September 22, 2017 |
iPhone X | September 12, 2017 | November 3, 2017 |
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus | September 7, 2016 | September 16, 201 6 |
iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus | September 9, 2015 | September 25, 2015 |
As you can see, one month in particular seems to be Apple’s favorite for announcing its new phones. With the exception of 2020 — the year affected by the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic — Apple announced its latest iPhone in September. And not just at random points in September — all of these iPhone ads have come within the first two weeks of the month.
As for release dates, there’s a noticeable pattern there, too. Apple tends to ship its phones 10 days after announcing it, though there are notable exceptions. Sometimes, Apple falters in launching certain models like the iPhone XR in 2018 and the iPhone X in the previous year. In general, the overlapping launches reflect supply issues with certain models — something that could also be an issue in 2023.
iPhone 15 release date: what dates to expect
With no solid rumors surrounding the iPhone 15 release date, we’re only left to do a bit of guesswork. This means assuming that Apple’s past performance offers a hint of its future plans.
In other words, given Apple’s preference for early September launches, we expect the iPhone 15 to be announced sometime during the first two weeks of September 2023. With the first of the month following on a Friday — not a day any tech company is likely to hold a launch event — that It gives us a window from Monday, September 4th through Thursday, September 14th for a likely iPhone 15 launch.
There are two more things to consider. First, when possible, Apple holds its product announcements every Tuesday. Secondly, on Monday, September 4th is the Labor Day holiday in the United States. Not only does this particular day rule out, it likely means Apple will avoid Tuesday, September 5, as that would come in a three-day weekend.
That leaves the following Tuesday, September 12th, as the most likely day for the iPhone 15 event, assuming Apple sticks to the early September window. And the She exercises her preference for Tuesday launch. We’re not saying this will be history, but it does give us a window to work with.
If we guessed correctly and Apple sticks to its habit of releasing phones 10 days after the launch event, the iPhone 15 release date will be placed around September 22nd.
As you might expect, there are caveats to this educated guess. Let’s start with the most obvious – trying to predict anything with absolute certainty nine months in advance is a fool’s game. A lot can change between now and then, so if you’re scribbling September 12th on your calendar for 2023, do it with the lighter, more erasable pencil you have.
Something to watch as 2023 kicks off are events in China, where most of the manufacturing and assembly work is done on iPhones. As 2022 draws to a close, Covid restrictions and worker protests have disrupted production at Foxconn’s facilities in China. Since Foxconn is Apple’s primary production partner, this had an impact on iPhone 14 supplies.
Foxconn said in December that it is in the process of restoring production capacity, and since we are far from starting production on the iPhone 15, there is no impact yet on the 2023 phones. But it is a situation that could flare up again, affecting the plans to release the iPhone 15.
On a somewhat related note, some rumors are predicting a new iPhone model, dubbed the iPhone 15 Ultra. Like the Apple Watch Ultra, this could be a higher-end version of the Apple smartphone produced in smaller numbers than the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models. If so, we could see a stunning release, similar to what Apple has done with niche models in the past.
iPhone 15 release date: Outlook
We can’t stress enough that it’s still early for iPhone 15 rumors to surface, which means any iPhone 15 release date claims are still in flux — even our own. Just plan on new iPhones likely to arrive in the fall, with a more solid date coming later in the year.
