After we were all consumed with our festive feasts, we opened our presents and saw our favourites hallmark christmas movies, The next burning question is when should you remove your Christmas decorations?
While some families wish for Christmas to be year-round, others worry that they will fall victim to bad luck if they leave their decorations out for too long. But how long is too long? Find out the official date by which you should be packing your Christmas decorations until the next holiday.
When should you take down your Christmas decorations?
According to Christian tradition, you will need to remove the decorations on the twelfth night after Christmas (Epiphany Eve). Usually this falls on the 5th or 6th of January, depending on how you count the 12 days of Christmas. For example, the Church of England counts from Christmas Day, so Twelfth Night always falls on January 5th. Other denominations, including the Catholic Church, begin counting from Boxing Day, making January 6 Twelfth Night (and Epiphany). Either way, it is bad luck to leave your decorations on display after the fifth day, and they are believed to pollute the new year.
What is Epiphany?
Epiphany is a day celebrated by Christians, also known as Three Kings Day. This marks the day when the Three Magi followed the shining star of Jerusalem to visit the baby Jesus, referring to him as King in Bethlehem. In fact, the word “Epiphany” is actually a Greek word, meaning “appearance” with the date itself symbolizing God’s coming to earth as a human being in the form of Jesus Christ.
