Can you use old watch bands on your Apple Watch Series 8?

Apple Watch Series 8 is available in 41mm and 45mm sizes. Does this mean it supports older watch bands? Let’s find out.

Since 2015, the Cupertino company has released six different Apple Watch sizes (excluding the 49mm Apple Watch Ultra): 38mm, 40mm, 41mm, 42mm, 44mm, and 45mm. The Apple Watch Series 8 is only available in 41mm and 45mm variants. If you have an older style band, it might work – depending on whether the size groups match. 38mm, 40mm and 41mm watch bands are compatible with each other. Similarly, the 42mm, 44mm, and 45mm bands are also compatible with each other. So if you have a 40mm Apple Watch band and you buy a 45mm Apple Watch Series 8, the band will not be compatible. However, the older 42mm band will work with this watch just fine.

It’s also worth noting that you can use the exclusive Apple Watch Ultra bands with the 45mm (not 41mm) Apple Watch Series 8 variant. If you own a 41mm variant and really want Ultra bands, you can look for third-party replicas that are compatible with the smaller watch.

Apple Watch Series 8 is the latest smartwatch from Apple. It’s not a huge change from the Series 7, but it does introduce new features like crash detection, a new temperature sensor, and more.

It’s really great that older bands work with newer Apple Watch models, as long as they belong to the same size group. This way, if you buy an expensive band, you don’t need to resell it just because you upgraded your smartwatch. Likewise, if you’ve already invested in a wide selection of Apple Watch bands to match different outfit styles and colors, you don’t need to rebuild your collection from scratch every time you upgrade the wearable.
