Rolling out the January 2023 Android security update for the Google Pixel and some Samsung Galaxy phones

New year, new updates. Google is making the first week of 2023 more exciting with a new Android Security Bulletin and corresponding updates for the eligible Pixel lineup, but not exactly on schedule.

The monthly Android Security Bulletin is usually published on the first Monday of every month, but the first Monday of January 2023 — January 2nd — was the day many American workers celebrated New Year’s holidays in the country. That’s because when a US federal holiday falls on a weekend, most workplaces celebrate the holiday on the closest day of the week instead. Hence, Google moved the January 2023 ASB build to today, and now the latest security update is rolling out for Pixel phones.

Interestingly, the Pixel range is not the first group of devices to get the update today. Samsung has already started pushing out new security patches to a few Galaxy smartphones since yesterday.

Android Security Bulletin January 2023

Fixed 20 issues in the January 13 Android patch dated 2023-01-01 and 40 issues in 2023-01-05. Vulnerabilities range from high to critical, and the most severe ones are related to kernel and resource components.

Notably, patches for these vulnerabilities have been in the works for a few weeks or months now and are only now being revealed. For more information on how the Android monthly security update process works, we recommend reading the explanation linked below.

How monthly Android security patch updates work

Pixel Update Bulletin / Functional Update

After last month’s big feature drop, this month’s Pixel update should only include the usual collection of under-the-hood improvements along with a few generation-specific fixes. The official announcement post hasn’t been published yet though, so we don’t have access to the actual changelog.

You should get the January 2023 security update starting today on your Pixel device, as long as you have one of the currently supported models. It includes the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro. The update is being rolled out to these devices with the version number TQ1A.230105.001/.002.

As always, Google uses the gradual release method to ensure maximum stability and reliability of the update. Not everyone will receive the OTA update right away, though you can download the OTA zip file or factory image from our Android 13 download article. Detailed instructions on flashing it are available here.
