The Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series for laptops delivers significant improvements in performance and efficiency

Nvidia has finally announced its RTX 40 series of GPUs for laptops, and introduced the full suite at once, from the RTX 4050 all the way up to the RTX 4090 — the first 90-series GPU designed for laptops. The new GPUs are based on the Ada Lovelace architecture, and they deliver the biggest jump in performance ever, according to Nvidia, which means gaming laptops are about to become even more capable.

Three times more efficient, four times faster

Despite the controversy over the power usage of its desktop GPUs, Nvidia claims significant energy efficiency gains for the GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs. Specifically, the company says that the new GPUs are three times more power efficient, Which means you get more performance while using less energy. In fact, Nvidia says the GeForce RTX 4070 is faster than its last-generation flagship GPU, while using only a third of the power.

This is thanks in part to fifth-generation Max-Q technologies, including Whispermode and BatteryBoost, as well as the ability to dynamically switch between three power modes. What’s more, Nvidia says it uses the lowest-voltage GDDR6 memory ever, allowing for extra power efficiency.

However, it is not just efficient. Nvidia also claims that you can get up to four times the performance in AAA games like Cyberpunk 2077 movie. This claim is likely bolstered by DLSS 3 support, which is also coming to laptops for the first time. This includes Nvidia’s frame generation technology, which uses deep learning and artificial intelligence to create new frames without using traditional rendering, so you get a smoother experience without as much raw power. Nvidia claims you can game on three monitors in 4K at 60 frames per second with the laptop’s top-tier GPUs.

A notable big use case for these new Nvidia GPUs is 14-inch laptops, which are becoming increasingly popular, but aren’t usually suited for demanding tasks. With these more efficient GPUs, creating games and content on these laptops should be much easier.

Pricing and availability

The lineup of Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs for laptops includes plenty of cards right out of the gate. Nvidia is releasing the GeForce RTX 4090, 4080, 4070, 4060, and 4050 cards next month, but not at the exact same time.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 will be the first to launch, with the laptops available starting February 8th, with prices starting at $1,999.

The laptops with Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, 4060 and 4050 will be available starting February 22nd, and prices will start at $999. Despite this difference, this rollout is much faster than what we see with desktop GPUs, as Nvidia is also introducing the RTX 4070 Ti today, the third member of the RTX 40 series.
