Satellite images reveal startling changes in local vegetation due to the Arctic freeze

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Recent images captured by NASA’s Terra satellite reveal how the Arctic eruption in December dramatically changed the landscape around Houston.

Remember that during the first half of December, Houston experienced record warmth, with six straight days hitting highs in the 80s. This allowed the local grasslands to vegetate significantly before the Arctic cold front arrived two weeks later.

An instrument known as MODIS (or Medium Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured green areas around Houston on Dec. 15, 2022. A recent pass by the same satellite on Jan. 5, 2023 shows how much local grasslands have turned brown as a result. The hard freeze, which led to nearly record lows in teens across much of southeast Texas.
