Authorities said a sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed late Friday afternoon in the Southern California city of Lake Elsinore. The suspect is in custody.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said the deputy, identified as Darnell Calhoun, was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Calhoun later succumbed to his injuries, the sheriff’s department tweeted Friday night.
The circumstances of the shooting were not clear. No further details were provided immediately.
“We are devastated to announce the death of Representative Darnell Calhoun, who was killed in the line of duty this afternoon,” the sheriff’s office said. books.
The suspect’s condition has not been confirmed.
Lake Elsinore is located about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

The suspect, William McKay, 44, was shot and killed later that day by officers following a dramatic police chase across multiple highways. Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco said McKay had an extensive criminal history with convictions for kidnapping, robbery and multiple assaults with a deadly weapon.
