The new look that just dropped makes the iPhone app for Netflix look more befitting of one of the best streaming services than ever before. We noticed changes (after updating the app) when playing a “quick” sound effect after selecting a user profile using Thing from the popular Wednesday show.
Changes like this one, which makes some of the best Netflix shows feel more “alive” in the app, are neat. And Netflix’s new look often seems to be about supporting a particular show or movie. The new “billboard” layout presents a single view at the top of the screen as you navigate through TV, movies, and genres – and it might feel like browsing posters at the cinema.
This update, which is currently rolling out, was previewed yesterday (Jan 16th) by the engineer and interaction designer Janome Trivedi, (Opens in a new tab) Who led the update for the Netflix app. Posted about it on Twitter. He highlighted five new features, starting with a bulletin board layout that reacts to how you move your iPhone.
After updating the Netflix app to check it out for myself, I saw that the stickers at the top of the screen moved slightly as I changed the position of my phone.
Trivedi also highlighted the featured display’s “background gradients created on the go from art,” a feature that takes us back to the good old days of the Apple Music app. As you navigate the Netflix app, you’ll also notice new animations in transitions as you move from one show to the next. These animations are basically “live” as they happen, as you can interrupt one in the middle of an action. You may also notice haptic feedback.

However, the biggest updates, if we have to say, involve rebranding the Coming Soon section as “New & Hot”. Here, you’ll see a mix of upcoming Netflix shows, like That ’90s Show, and current popular titles. We’ve also seen the Fast Laughs section, which is much like the Stories section from TikTok or Instagram.
However, the Netflix app is still your average Netflix app, especially with its large grids of playable boxes and readable movies.
Analysis: The Netflix app still has its biggest flaws
Netflix, like many streaming service apps, does a poor job of helping you find the slate of shows and movies you’ve just been watching. In our testing, there are currently three full screen iPhone lengths in this row.
They even put it below the games section. Somehow, Netflix thinks that going back to the show you were watching is something to do After, after I’ve thought of forgettable gaming options.
This makes Netflix look completely different from the way we see it. I don’t know anyone who likes Netflix games, and I doubt people open the app and stare at the game.
