Bullets flying at Thunder gun range: Conroe neighborhood worried about more stray ammunition hitting homes, cars and chimneys

Conroe, Texas (KTRK) – A neighborhood in Conroe next to a gun range is on edge, fearing they will be shot after bullets fly through homes, cars, garages and chimneys.

Thunder Gun Range borders the Artavia subdivision, which was built about four years ago. Most of the people who live there said they knew what they were getting into by living near a gun range, but it never happened.

Neighbors shared photos of the bullet holes, and a man who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals showed us the bullet he found in his backyard. He said he’s an avid shooter and wants to live close by, but he didn’t expect stray bullets to fly so close to his house.

“I have lived in the past near rifle ranges, the expectation being that bullets will not leave rifle range,” he said. “We’re concerned that we can’t be out there without being in danger, especially how often that happens.”

Afton Fitzsa and her husband have two children, one of whom is a newborn, and they recently discovered a bullet gun in their car.

“My husband was in the yard and noticed a bullet in the front of his car where his head was supposed to be. So, that’s pretty scary,” said Fitza. “At this point, we don’t know what to do about it.”

ABC13 spoke to the gun range’s owner on the phone, Jesse Gonzalez, who did not answer our questions. He said he was not happy Our report is Tuesday When he told us it wasn’t a big deal for a man to self-injure while firing a shotgun at his sight earlier this month.

Some neighbors have filed police reports with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, but officials say it’s very difficult to prove where the bullets came from. The division hopes something can be done so they don’t have to live in constant fear.

“I would like them to be more responsible and enforce standard safety protocols at the shooting range and build barriers or something,” the neighbor said.

US Customs and Border Protection has a contract with the Thunder Gun Range. A spokesperson said they “offer a custom scope and class so our Houston area federal law enforcement officers can complete their mandatory firearm qualification exams.”

According to Thunder’s owner, the federal officers fired in the opposite direction from the subdivision.

The owner of the Defender Collection did not respond whether he would consider strengthening safety measures.
