BB gun at Waller County school: Parents upset over lack of detail regarding student bringing in a gun and injuring 2 others

Pattison, Texas (KTRK) – Questions remain about an incident involving a Royal elementary student who brought a BB gun to school and shot two other students on Friday.

District officials said the students were unharmed. But some parents are upset and confused, and don’t know what is being done to prevent this from happening again.

Keiana Robinson said she first heard about the incident when she picked up her fifth-grade student at the school. Her autistic son told her that a student in his class brought a BB gun to school.

He said, “Someone got shot, and they went to the nurse, but they didn’t come back to class after that.” “No one in the front office said anything when I picked him up early,” Robinson said.

Robinson gave her son school credit when it came to visitors on campus, but she was still concerned to hear that some sort of weapon had made it through.

She added: “It makes me feel anxious and scared. I don’t want to worry every day that I have to send my son to school. They have a great system with parents who can’t walk through the doors.” “But what about students who don’t bring a deadly weapon? Should we have metal detectors in schools at this point?”

Royal ISD said they sent a notification via text, email, phone, website and social media at about 2:40 p.m., confirming that two of the students had been shot but not injured.

ABC13 got hold of their statement, which read in part:

“The parents of both students have been notified. The item has been confiscated, and appropriate steps have been taken to secure the situation. All students are safe and there is no active threat. A campus counselor will be available for any student who needs assistance due to the incident. Royal ISD’s highest priority is the safety of our students, staff, and community.” “

However, some parents said they did not get the message. Robinson said she received a text ordering her to read her email. She is upset and confused, thinking that the school should have handled communication with parents more urgently.

“We have to be comfortable and safe with our students. The school should have done more by reaching out to these parents, specifically in that classroom. A text, email is not enough. It could have been a lot worse,” he said.

Parents like Robinson also want to know: How did a student get a BB gun into school? What is being done to discipline a student who had a BB gun? Will their parents face any charges? How will the district prevent this from happening again?

A Royal ISD spokesperson said the case had been “referred to law enforcement authorities, and the following steps will be taken in accordance with the Code of Conduct and Discipline”.

Requests for comment from the Royal ISD Police and Waller County Event Control had not been responded to as of Monday evening.
