James Gunn had two major DC projects in the works before being taken over by DC Studios

This past Halloween, James Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-CEOs of DC Studios, a new Warner Bros. Discovery-owned movie studio responsible for making movies and TV shows based on a slew of DC Comics characters. Prior to the new structure, the two already had a few projects in the works. Sunday, Gunn confirmed that he’s been working on DCU projects even before he gets his new job.

Sharing an article on his Instagram story, Gunn explained a production schedule Superman: Legacy– feature film – and Creature Commandos—HBO Max Animated Series. According to him, both projects were already in development by him and Safran before the two landed over DC Studios.

What will be the first released DCU project?

As of now, it appears Creature Commandos It will be the first project launched by DC Studios. since Superman: Legacy Currently dated July 2025, the anime series will likely be released in the last months of 2024.

Creature Commandos It’s based on a big DC team,” Gunn said previously at a DC Studios event. What we do with the DCU is we have animation that directly relates to the live action. TV, movies, and games are intertwined in the same universe. We’re going to cast actors who will be able to play the characters in this as well as other things, some of which we’ve already cast. She has written all seven episodes of the show, and they are in production. This is the first thing, and I love it.”

Who are Creature Commandos?

Created by Jeff Lemire and Abraham Roberson, Nina Mazursky was a SHADE scientist whose life and marriage fell apart after losing her young daughter to a terminal illness. She created the Creature Commandos, and initially ended up going against the Atom. This first generation of creatures was unstable, and had to be imprisoned in a microscopic prison called The Zoo, but Nina created a second generation of commando creatures, who turn out to be the heroes she now fights with. Including herself in the experiment, she transforms into an amphibious genius in a private suit.

The DC Universe officially kicks off with Creature Commandoswhich has yet to specify a release date, and Superman: Legacywhich enters theaters July 11, 2025.
