Astros 2023 Spring Training: Legendary Houston native Will Wagner digs in as full-team camp begins in West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (KTRK) – During his stellar career as a relief pitcher, Billy Wagner made 225 saves for the Astros. That total is more than any other pitcher in team history, mainly because “Billy the Kid” is a member of the Astros Hall of Fame.

His son, 24-year-old Will Wagner, says he doesn’t really remember his dad promoting the movie Stros. But at spring training in 2023, Will makes new Wagner memories with his father’s team.

“I mean, it’s crazy,” Will Wagner, who plays court, said before the team’s first full practice Tuesday in West Palm Beach. “It’s such an honor to be here with a team that just won the world championship. There’s a lot to learn from here. I’m lucky to be here.”

Will Wagner, who was born in Houston during his father’s fourth season with the Astros, is participating in major league spring training for the first time. After being selected in the 18th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Will Wagner was promoted to minor league Double-A last season, just two steps away from the major leagues. Eyewitness Sports asked him about the advice his father gave him before spring training.

“Just to have it, enjoy it, enjoy it,” said Will Wagner, also a Liberty University alumnus. “Don’t push yourself too hard. He’s been there and told me a lot about it.”

And young Will will have some stories of his own. His locker room for the Astros is between Alex Bregman and Jeremy Peña.
