Android 14 can let you create an emoji wallpaper on your Pixel phone

Google has released its second developer preview for Android 14 Earlier today, we brought with it the feature to access the selected photos we told you about earlier. As always, a lot of the new features in the new version aren’t visible by default, which is why we painstakingly comb each release to document what’s new. Our latest hit is a feature that seems to be exclusive to Pixel phones: emoji wallpapers.

back in january, The New York Times I published an article It details how Google planned to combat the threat posed by ChatGPT. In it, they also put some of the company’s photo and video projects in action, including a “wallpaper maker for the Pixel smartphone.” In Android 14 DP2, we discovered a new “Emoji Wallpaper” app grouped in the /Product section. This app, as I just mentioned, appears to be Pixel exclusive, as its package name is “com.google.android.apps.emojiwallpaper” and requires the feature tag “com.google.android.feature.PIXEL_EXPERIENCE” to be declared.

By default, the emoji wallpaper picker is not active, but after toggling the debug flag, I was able to get it to appear in the Wallpaper & Picker app. Once enabled, the new “Emoji Lab” option appeared in the background menu. Clicking it opened a user interface that let me create a new wallpaper with different emojis. When creating a wallpaper, you can choose up to 14 emojis to include in the design, choose from patterns like “Mosaic,” “Lotus,” “Stacks,” “Sprinkle,” and “Prism,” and choose between different colors. If you don’t know what layout you want, you can click the “Random” button to let the app generate a random emoji wallpaper.

After creating an emoji wallpaper, your creation is saved and visible under Background & Styles > Wallpaper > Emoji Lab. The app can save multiple emoji wallpapers that you create, and you can switch between them by tapping them in the list and then hitting “set wallpaper”. You can also tap the pencil icon to edit the background of emojis you’ve already created. You may be able to share the emoji wallpapers I made, but I wasn’t able to show this feature yet during my initial digging.

As I mentioned before, this feature is not enabled by default in Android 14 DP2. Thus, there is no guarantee that it will be available when the stable version of Android 14 for Pixel phones is released.
