Malala Yousafzai arrives at the Academy Awards for Stranger at the Gate

Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, 25, was executive producer of Stranger at the Gate, a short documentary nominated.

“It’s a powerful message about the power of compassion, kindness and forgiveness,” Yousafzai said in a red carpet interview. “And that is something anyone can relate to, from any corner of the world.”

In the film, Richard “Mac” McKinney admits that he hated Muslims deeply and was plotting to blow up the Islamic Center in his community in Muncie, Indiana. He decides to visit the mosque to gather information about these people he hates so much. Then, after eight weeks, everything changed.

“It’s a powerful and transformative story,” producer Conall Jones said. “People are not ready. We try as much as we can to prepare people but they change when they see it.”

Yousafzai, who was wearing a silver Ralph Lauren gown, said her dress represented “peace, love and harmony”.

“I feel so much myself in it,” she said.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Yousafzai said of attending the Oscars. “I can’t wait to see all of my favorite celebs. I’m rooting for Michelle Yeoh, I can’t wait to see Austin Butler, and I hope everyone has the best moment here.

“I’m just here to have a good time and watch Rihanna perform, so a lot of great things are going to happen tonight.”

Yousafzai isn’t the only Nobel laureate with a stake in the Oscars tonight — the Peace Prize laureate is joined by Nobel Prize for Literature winner Kazuo Ishiguro, who is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Looking.”
