One dead and another wounded after a gunman opened fire outside a Dallas high school

Arlington, Texas – Police said one student was killed and another injured when a third student opened fire outside a Dallas-area high school prior to his arrest Monday morning.

The shooting began on the campus of the high school in suburban Arlington at about 6:55 a.m., before many students arrived for the first day to return to classes after spring break, according to police and school district officials.

Anita Foster, a spokeswoman for the Arlington Independent School District, said one student was hit by gunfire and another sustained “debris from gunfire.”

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones said Monday afternoon that the student who was shot died in the hospital and the other victim was receiving care for non-life-threatening injuries.

Arlington police said the suspected shooter did not enter the Lamar High School building and was arrested shortly after officers arrived on the scene. They said the scene was safe in their tweet at 7:21 a.m

Police spokesman Tim Sisko said the suspected shooter is a minor and therefore will not be publicly identified. He said the ministry would provide more information during an afternoon press conference.

Foster said school buses and other incoming students were diverted from campus before classes began.

Officials urged parents and others to stay away from campus while the police investigated.

Police said at 10:40 a.m. that they had completed their search of the school building and the students would be released to their parents at a “reunion center” starting at noon.
