Grishaverse fans are hoping Shadow and Bone Season 3 will be recalled on Netflix. The fantasy saga recently released its sequel, which has been burning up Top 10 lists. While a third season hasn’t been ordered, the show’s creative team already has plans for more adventures involving Alina, Mal, and Crows.
Shadow and Bone, based on the popular Leigh Bardugo books, takes place in a world where people practice magic (it’s called “little science”). Called Grisha, they can manipulate the elements, such as metal, bodies, and air.
Alena Starkov (Jessie May Lin) is an extremely rare sun summoner, who has the power to eradicate the Shadow Fold, a dangerous darkness that divides the nation of Rafka. She is opposed by Shadow Summoner, aka Darkling, aka General Kirigan (Ben Barnes).
Shadow and Bone Season 2 sends Alina to faraway locations to find new allies and new weapons to defeat the Darkling and destroy Shadow Fold. Ultimately, the series differs greatly from the books. It’s possible that the third installment, going forward, will mix stories from the books and the original material entirely.
Here’s what we know so far about Shadow and Bone Season 3.
Is Shadow and Bone Season 3 Confirmed?
Shadow and Bone season 3 has not been renewed by Netflix.
Given the show’s popularity (it was also the #1 TV show on Netflix in the US in the first four days according to FlixPatrol (Opens in a new tab)), regeneration seems more than possible.
Shadow and Bone Season 3 release date speculation
If Shadow and Bone season 3 gets the green light, it may not arrive for some time.
Almost two years elapsed between the releases of Seasons 1 and 2. Some of that may have to do with pandemic-related delays. But another reason could be the significant visual effects required in post-production.
It’s likely that a similar amount of time will pass before Shadow and Bone season 3 premieres. Our best guess is spring 2025.

in the first two seasons, Ben Barnes as General Kerrigan, may not come back. He kills Kerrigan in the second season finale and burns his body. However, he may return in visions or dreams experienced by Alina or other characters.
Several other key players are expected to return. of between it Archie Reno as Malien “Mal” Oritsovtracker and Alina’s childhood best friend who has assumed the mantle of the pirate Sturmhond.

The plot of shadow and bone season 3
Shadow and Bone Season 3’s plot may weave stories from several books by Bardugo. Not only did Season 2 do that, but it also made big changes.
The biggest change is that Alina does not lose her powers during Kerrigan’s defeat, so she and Mal do not retire to the country for a quiet life. Instead, the lovers part for a while. Alina stays on Rafka to stand by the newly crowned King Nikolai, while Mal takes up the mantle of the ship Stormund to sail the open seas.
This choice appears to have been made to preserve two main cast members (Lane and Rhino).
“Fortunately, we make new material for actors we know and love and we trust who will hold water for us on this one,” said co-showrunner Eric Heisserer. Entertainment Weekly (Opens in a new tab). “It’s weaving their story into the King of Scars duology that we already love, and what we think will come out on screen from those. So it’s a matter of stitching those together the way we stitched other characters into those first two seasons.”
The finale ended up setting up a possible Shadow and Bone season 3. During Nikolai’s coronation, Fjerdan attacks everyone present. Apparently she was using the addictive drug jurda parem.
Elsewhere, in Ketterdam, Kaz explains that the jurda parem amplifies Grisha’s powers a thousandfold. The Crows are hired to save the scientist who developed the drug, which is now being experimented on Fjerda, in hopes of preventing an all-out war between nations.
The story of Jurda parem comes directly from Six of Crows, the first book in the duology.
Meanwhile, the ending also revealed that Nikolai had apparently kept some Shadow Beast in Kerrigan. This story comes from King of Scars, also the first book in the duology. Zoya Nazyalensky is a major character involved, which makes it all the more significant that Alina tapped her to train Grisha.
As for Alina herself, her future is unclear, as it differs from the books. She kills the coronation attacker with pieces, a method used by Kerrigan. The Darkling’s influence appears to hold, even after “death”.
Meanwhile, Mal is sailing on the Hummingbird. Despite their confessions of love, he and Alaina decide to break up and see if they can get back together. With Inej on board, they look to target the slave ships.
