Florida school principal resigns after complaints about ‘pornographic’ David sculpture

The principal of a Florida charter school resigned this week after parents complained when sixth graders were shown pictures of Michelangelo’s “David” statue during an art history lesson.

Hope Carrasquilla has submitted her resignation to the Tallahassee Classical School Board after parents alleged that images of one of the world’s most famous and iconic statues were “pornographic” and “inappropriate” for the school, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

“It saddens me that my time here has to end this way,” Carrasquilla told the Tallahassee Democrat.

School board president Barney Bishop told CBS News Saturday that Carrasquilla was asked to resign due to “a number of other issues,” the latest incident being the icing on the cake.

He claimed that Carrasquilla knew that if she blamed Michelangelo’s image for her resignation, the “mainstream media” would “misrepresent” her and not report the truth.

A tuition-free lottery-based public charter school, the facility opened its doors in 2020 to the Tallahassee community and offers a classical education to approximately 350 students, according to its website. The school is affiliated with Hillsdale College, a conservative Christian college, and follows its own curriculum.

Carrasquilla was the school’s third principal since it opened its doors, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. The first director became pregnant before she took the job, Bishop told CBS News, and the second was an interim director relocating from Texas.

Bishop told CBS News that Tallahassee Classics protocol states that the administration must notify parents before offering any potentially controversial lesson plans to children. Bishop said art teachers show pictures of David every year and letters are always sent out.

But this year, no letter was sent, Bishop said, adding that 97% of parents agreed with the lesson and who were not “entitled to have that opinion.”

There was no immediate response to a request for further comment from Carrasquilla.

Tallahassee Classical School School said “David has always engaged with our scientists and will continue to do so,” in a statement on their Facebook page. They published it alongside Michelangelo’s “David” portrait – which was Italian Renaissance Sculpted in marble by an artist from 1501 to 1504 – showing the full nudity of the statue.

“We will follow our policy and inform our parents in advance so that they can make their own decision if the age is appropriate for their child,” the school said.
