10 Blue mushroom

So far, the blue mushroom is the only power featured in the movie that has a negative effect on the condition. This was hinted at early on, but it wasn’t until Mario ate mushrooms during his battle with Donkey Kong that fans got to see what happens when someone uses them. Mario has shrunk in size instead of growing larger. It was especially funny, given that Donkey Kong was already older than Mario, to begin with. It reappeared when it was used to shrink the chariot.

9 green crust

Mario holds a green shell on a rainbow path

The green shell is more of an item than an energy source. It can be used in the old Mario games to eliminate enemies after stopping a turtle. However, what really made it popular was the racing game Mario Kart. In that game, it is used as a standard weapon to take out other drivers in front of and behind the player. Green projectiles were used during a Mario Kart scene in the movie – they were flying everywhere, causing havoc on Rainbow Road.

8 Tanuki suit

The Mario Tanuki suit is one of those weird costumes that shouldn’t be iconic but is. In fact, elements of it are on the cover art for the Super Mario Bros. game. From Nintendo 3. Getting the suit allows Mario to fly around the level at incredible speeds and access secret and hidden locations he couldn’t otherwise.

Although it was not used in this manner in the movie, it allowed him to fly and take out the Koopa army with ease. Seeing him and Donkey Kong work together in such a way was such an amazing sight to watch.

7 Banana peel

Mario Kart banana peel

In the Mario Kart games, a banana peel might be the worst thing to get. It’s pretty much the only thing a main contestant can get. Therefore, clips can be littered with them, which is exactly what happens in the Super Mario Bros. movie.

Banana peels were pretty much everywhere on the Rainbow Trail, clogging up what was already a very busy track. Still, it’s such an iconic portrayal of Donkey Kong that it was all too fitting to see him slash and take out the koobas that were chasing them.

6 Red mushroom

Introduce Mario to a red mushroom

Red mushrooms are the bread and butter of the Super Mario Bros. gameplay experience. It’s what allows Mario to grow up and survive getting hit. There isn’t much thought of power-up in the actual game, but things get complicated when Mushrooms is adapted to film.

When Mario eats the mushrooms featured in the movie, he gets physically bigger and stronger, as if he’s gaining superpowers. He mainly uses it during the training level sequence. They don’t necessarily reappear, as Mario has been busy using other powers. But still, it was definitely interesting to see how this iconic powerhouse was adapted to the story.

5 fire flower

Fire Flower is definitely an interesting powerhouse. When you appear to fighters in Super Smash Bros. The flower itself is used to disperse the fire. Things were a little different in the Super Mario Bros. movie, where touching a flower essentially gives the user the ability to shoot fireballs, similar to what happens in the actual game.

It’s also nice because it changes the user’s appearance, giving them a completely different look similar to what happens in games. It wasn’t very strong in terms of plot, but it was amazing to see.

4 Spikey shell

Anyone who has ever played Mario Kart knows the importance of prickly shell. In Mario Kart 64, it is perhaps the most powerful element behind a star and lightning bolt. It’s basically a homing missile that hovers the driver right in first position, taking out any driver unlucky enough to get stuck in his way along the way.

In the movie, it’s not so much an isolated element as it is Koopa who decides to use his own shell to take out Mario with devastating effects.

3 Snow flower

Ice Flower Mario from Super Smash Bros.

In the actual Mario games, the Fire Flower is probably even more powerful than the Ice Flower. It is also more useful. However, Ice Flower plays a much larger role in the movie. It’s the power Peach uses to save herself from marrying Bowser. She uses it to freeze the wagon and take out several other Koopa soldiers. Also, she uses them to freeze chains and prevent Luigi from burning up in lava. It’s a very pivotal moment in the movie, made possible by that power.

2 cat suit

Mario's cat suit is ready to pounce

As far as the most famous suit is concerned, the Tanooki suit is definitely the most famous. It is also more powerful in Super Mario Bros 3. However, the catsuit played a more important role in the plot of the actual movie.

This is the suit that allowed Mario to defeat Donkey Kong and recruit Kong’s army to take on Kobas. While Donkey Kong had strength, this suit gave Mario the speed he needed to bounce around the level and overwhelm a powerful enemy.

1 a star

Bowser with star from Mario Bros. film

That’s what the movie was really about. The story begins with Bowser being bought from Penguin Kingdom. This power is also what made the Mushroom Kingdom so fearful. It was a huge mistake for Bowser not to use the star when he had it. In the end, Mario and Luigi manage to touch the star together and become invincible in one of the movie’s best moments.

The star’s famous music was played in the background as they were taken out of the cabas. It’s unclear whether or not there are more stars, but no other powerhouse comes close.
