Tax season 2024: How looking forward to next year’s season can save you money

It’s never too early to start thinking about the upcoming tax season now that last year’s filing deadline has passed.

For those who offered the extension, you have until October, but experts say, don’t wait because it can not only save you time, but your hard-earned money.

The tax experts at Baker Ripley’s Tax Centers have been serving our neighbors since 2009.

With this alone, they’ve already helped provide over 30,000 free returns to those under the $58,000 annual income limit.

After helping so many taxpayers, there are several ways to save for next year, says Christina Keefe, director of community relations at Baker Ripley.

If you’re a shared driver, make sure you keep track of your miles and report all earnings, no matter how small.

Cave says it can save you a huge headache.

She said, “Imagine keeping track of the whole year, on your own, just guessing and going back on each of those trips. So just make sure you do it soon because it really makes life easier and then you won’t lose any money.”

During the pandemic, Keef says, many people may have worked multiple jobs and are still working today. You want to make sure that you claim all of your earnings on your taxes, so have all your paperwork ready.

“Keep track of every job you had during the year and also the time frame you worked in because the next year, in January, you need to make sure that you receive your W2s or your 1099s from your employers because they take taxes from this and potentially that is Money you can get back,” Keef said.

She also suggests making sure your W4 is up to date with your employer. The information will tell them how much tax to withhold from your paycheck based on the dependents you claim, marital status, and how you plan to file. You can change the information at any time.

“Let’s say last tax season you had that ugly surprise because they withheld too much tax or too little tax, just go back to your employer and tell them, ‘I want to update my W4,’” Cave said, adding that it’s a simple process.

The Baker Ripley Tax Center has 12 locations in our area.

They will be open next week through October for those who have applied for an extension, need help with modifications, or need to go back to how it was in 2018.

Again, the services are free and for those with an annual income of less than $58,000.
