Austin, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott on Wednesday appointed John Scott to serve temporarily as Texas attorney general after the House of Representatives voted to impeach Ken Paxton, a Republican, over allegations of misconduct and crimes.

Scott, an attorney, previously worked in the attorney general’s office and most recently served as the Texas Secretary of State. Abbott appointed him to the state’s chief election official in October 2021 and he served until December 2022, when he left the position before the state Senate voted to confirm his appointment.

The vote came after a months-long House investigation into the attorney general that resulted 20 counts Alleging widespread abuses of power, including obstruction of justice, bribery, and abuse of public trust.

Paxton criticized the accusation as an attempt to “overthrow the will of the people and disenfranchise the electors of our state.” He said the accusations were based on “rumour, gossip, and parrots allegations that have long since been disproved.”

Scott briefly joined former President Donald Trump’s legal team last year when he challenged the results of the 2020 election, though he withdrew after three days. His appointment as Texas election chief has upset voting rights groups because it came amid pressure from Trump and Republican activists to conduct a review of the election despite Trump winning the state by 300,000 votes.

Scott also served as Deputy Attorney General when Abbott was Attorney General. As a state litigator, he defended Texas’ strict voter ID law, which was allowed to operate after years of court challenges by Democrats and minority rights groups.
