How to upgrade SSD in Asus ROG Ally

The Asus ROG Ally is a high-end Windows handheld video game, and the highest device you can get has up to 512GB of storage. That’s a decent amount of storage, but installing a game is like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II It’ll take up about 20% of that right away. Add to that other games that are all approaching the 100GB mark, and suddenly, you’re running out of storage space. Upgrading your device’s storage is a great remedy for that, and luckily, Asus makes it really easy. In fact, I would argue that it is an easier process than installing Windows on a regular computer.

About this tutorial: The Asus ROG Ally was sent to us by Asus for review purposes. The Corsair MP600 was sent to us by Corsair for review purposes. Neither company had any input on the contents of this tutorial.

What you need to replace the SSD on the Asus ROG Ally

  • Asus ROG ally Still covered with guarantee
  • M2 2230 SSD (this is the only size that will fit ROG Ally)
  • Screwdriver (I used a 1.4mm slot)
  • Plastic separator (even an old credit card can do this)
  • Internet connection

To get started, you will need all of the above. If you need help choosing an SSD, we’ve got a list of the best M2 2230 SSDs you can use (you can’t even use an MP2442 SSD because it’s so big). We’re using a Corsair MP600 here. Asus also specifically says that to use Asus Cloud Recovery (which we use to reinstall Windows), your hardware must be under warranty.

The Corsair MP600 is a great SSD that you can slip into your Asus ROG Ally or Steam Deck, and it has 1TB of storage that you can fill with as many games as you want.

Step 1: Remove the back panel

Turn off the Asus ROG Ally and remove the back panel. Removing the back panel requires removing six screws. You can then take out the back panel by sliding a plastic separator (or even just an old credit card) between the seams.

Once the back panel is lifted, you will see a black sheet between the fans. This sheet covers both the battery and the SSD. We won’t remove this sheet, but you’ll need to hold it off while you disconnect the battery and swap out the SSD.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

It is important to disconnect the battery to ensure that the console is completely powered off. You can disconnect either end of the battery cable shown above just to make sure that no current is flowing through any part of the device.

Step 3: Unplug your SSD and swap in the new one

Simply unscrew the SSD from this slot, and you should be able to pull it out with a little force. You can pull it out by grabbing its sides and rocking it left and right as you pull.

You can then connect and install your new SSD. Once that’s done, you can connect the battery, put it back on the ROG Ally’s rear panel, and put it back in again.

Step 4: Boot into BIOS and enter Asus Cloud Recovery

Once ROG Ally is ready to go, you will need to enter Advanced Mode in BIOS to use Asus Cloud Recovery.

  1. Catch Lower the sound and the Power button while the device is turned off.
  2. Once you are in the BIOS, press s to enter Advanced mode.
  3. He chooses Asus Cloud Recovery.

Asus Cloud Recovery says it requires your hardware to be under warranty to use it, and it also needs an internet connection, we suggest connecting ROG Ally for the duration of this installation process as well.

Step Five: Install Windows

The Asus ROG Ally cloud recovery service will handle the Windows installation for you once you enter your network connection details. Just let it run and follow the instructions on the screen. It may reboot into a menu like the one below at some point, in which case, just select Cloud Recovery to proceed with the installation.

This process is very time consuming and there are a lot of files that you need to download as well. As a result, be patient, especially if your internet connection is slower. At this point in the process, you can leave it alone for Windows to install.

ROG Ally will also restart several times as it installs all Ally drivers, and you may see a screen as shown below at several points. Do not select any of these options; Just let Ally process what it needs in the background.

At this point in the process, you are all done. If Windows boots, it means it succeeded, and you’ll be able to see the new SSD and all the storage it has from Windows Explorer. You can then proceed to install all of your games as you normally would, and you’ll benefit from the new SSD’s storage and speed improvements.

What SSD to get?

If all you want to do is play more games on your ROG Ally without filling up precious storage space, there are plenty of M2 2230 SSDs to choose from. We used a Corsair MP600, but there are others you can look at as well.
