Starfield: Piracy Explained

You don’t have to be the perfect person when adventuring through Starfield. In line with all of Bethesda’s previous games and series, you can play your character how you want, engaging in some activities that are not so morally correct. Steal, murder, or just be a smart mouth; you can be the exact kind of scumbag you always dreamed of but never could be.

This is a big reason why piracy exists in the game. That’s right, those other space travelers you come across in the game are not just there for the sake of immersion. If you want to, you can choose to attack them and take their goods for yourself, helping yourself to become the ultimate space pirate that strikes fear into others.

How Does Piracy Work?

Starfield - Ship Destroying Another Ship

To start the act of piracy in Starfield, you will need to hail the other ship that you are targeting. When you aim your camera at the ship, you will be given the prompt to “Hail” the ship in order to engage in conversation with it. There will be a new batch of options that pop up on the screen, and you will find the option to engage in piracy with the ship.

Now, here is where things can change depending on where you are in the game: if the other ship is lower level than yours is, then they will peacefully surrender to you and give you what they have (though at the cost of some less valuable loot). Conversely, if the ship is a higher level than yours, they will fight back, resulting in a dogfight to the death. This is dangerous but yields some far better rewards if you are successful.

In these dogfights, you can choose to completely destroy the other ship and take what’s left of its contents from the remains floating out in space. Or, you can also choose to board the ship and fight your way through it to the command center and take over it completely.

To do this, you will need to unlock the Targeting Control Systems skill, and then during the dogfight, you will have to shoot out their engines. This will leave them vulnerable for you to fly up, dock, and board. From there, you just have to fight your way through the ship to take it for yourself. Just be careful: the inhabitants of the ship probably aren’t going to give it over to your without a fight.

Of course, piracy is not just relegated to using your ship to attack others. You can also set up trade networks to smuggle illegal substances and contraband into cities and outposts. This is done by establishing Outposts around the galaxy and using the trade lines they come with to create ways for the goods to be delivered and moved.

While this is a much more subtle way of partaking in piracy, it is still a method of piracy that you can carry out even if you are not on your ship to do battle in the stars.
