If you’re planning on engaging in some less-than-honest means to make some money in Starfield, you’ll need to buy the tools necessary to manage a successful piracy operation. Finding a cache of Contraband and not being able to sell it at a Trade Authority shop because of planetary scans is frustrating. You’ll need to know how to hide your illegal Cargo from scans.
The Scan Jammer is a tool that increases the chance of you evading detection when your ship gets scanned by the authorities. It is not foolproof, but it vastly increases the chance of you getting away with smuggling if you have it installed on your ship. Here is how to get your hands on some.

Where To Buy A Scan Jammer
Scan Jammers are ship parts that can be bought from select vendors in Starfield. Currently, there are two known locations players can visit to buy them.
The Red Mile
The Red Mile is located on Porrima III in the Porrima system. The system is directly to the right of Alpha Centaurion on the star map. Here, find the Red Mile right next to a Science Outpost and land on it. Enter the building that says Red Mile in big red letters on the top and go through the depressurization chambers.
Enter the room with the large glass window behind the desk that says “Ship Services” to find Lon Andersson inside. This is the local Ship Services Technician and vendor selling Scan Jammers.
The Key
The second vendor selling Scan Jammers is Jasmin Durand, or “Jazz.” After you’ve joined the Crimson Fleet, you will be able to visit The Key and interact with her to buy a Scan Jammer. She is located in the Ship Services room on The Key.
Certain ships in Starfield have a chance of having a pre-installed Scan Jammer aboard. Hijacking these ships will allow the player to not have to pay for a Scan Jammer for their illicit activities. However, this is purely chance based and there is no guarantee.
How To Install A Scan Jammer On Your Ship
Talk to a vendor and progress the dialogue until you see the option “I’d like to view and modify my ships” to buy from them.
- Select Ship Builder by pressing B (Keyboard) or A (Controller).
- Click Add by pressing G (Keyboard) or A (Controler).
- Cycle through the categories until you find Equipment.
- Select the Scan Jammer you want and attach it to your ship. There will be a highlighted icon indicating where a Scan Jammer can be attached.
- Save and exit.
And that’s it! You’ve successfully installed a Scan Jammer on your ship.
