How To Unlock Shepherd & Friar

Quick Links

Not all characters in For the King 2 are unlocked right from the start. Like most Roguelikes, the game only starts with a limited cast of characters who can be selected before a run, and unlocking more classes requires completing certain objectives during a run.

The Shepherd and Friar are two of the early classes that can be unlocked during the second chapter of the game, The Primordial Oak. Players need to complete the optional challenges in this chapter to unlock both classes at the end of a successful run.

How To Complete ‘The Primordial Oak’ Objectives

Unlike the Alchemist or the Woodcutter, neither the Shepherd nor the Friar can be encountered during the course of a run. The only way to unlock both of them is by completing the adventure challenges of Chapter 2: The Primordial Oak.

After completing the first chapter and starting the second one, you’ll be shown a dialogue screen with three optional objectives that players can complete to gain additional rewards. Completing the chapter, as well as the first two adventure challenges, will result in unlocking the Shepherd and Friar at the end of the run. The two objectives to complete are:

  • Defeat The Forest: Kill 25 Goblins
  • Rush the Clock: Complete the adventure in 50 rounds or less

Kill 25 Goblins

Goblins are extremely common enemies in the second chapter. The final boss is a Goblin chieftain and all his lackeys are Goblins. Meaning that every main objective in the chapters involves killing goblins in some way or the other. Just play through the game normally, and you’ll encounter more than enough fights with Goblins to reach the goal of killing 25 of them.

On my first successful run, I didn’t realize Goblins were so common in this chapter and ended up seeking out every single Goblin that I could find and ambushing them to fill the quota. By the end of the run, a total of 98 Goblins were dead. Total overkill.

Rush The Clock (50 Rounds)

Completing the game in 50 Rounds is a difficult requirement to meet. The Landboat is your best friend here, as it will allow your entire party to beeline from one objective to the next without waiting for slower members to catch up.

To check which round you’re on, look to the top right of the chaos bar when navigating the overworld. It’ll be clearly stated which round you’re currently on.

There is little time to waste, so exploring the entire map is out of the question. The best course of action is to go in a straight line from objective to objective while keeping an eye out for useful tiles along the way.

You’ll also have to ignore any calamities like Graveborne or Warden Fraybee, as taking the time to reach their location will inevitably result in you losing out on valuable time. I ended up finishing The Primordial Oak in 44 Rounds by focusing on the main objectives to the exclusion of everything else.

Unlocking Shepherd & Friar

After you complete the Primordial Oak dungeon, the run will be completed. If you completed both adventure challenges as well, you’ll see pop-ups on the top right of the screen showing that Friar and Shepherd have been unlocked.

On the main menu, open the Lore Store and go to the characters tab. Friar can be unlocked here for 16 Lore and the Shepherd for 20 Lore. Pay the price for the unlocks, and you’ll be able to play as these classes during your next run.
