Elden Ring: Best Tank Build

Elden Ring is one of the best examples of a large epic fantasy game world for a player to dive into. It features a perfectly diverse range of starting options; lots of different enemies that have their own strengths, weaknesses, and patterns; and a mountain of gear options for designing many different kinds of playstyles. From those that use both Strength and Intelligence, to those that favor the faith stat.

One such playstyle that is immensely popular is being really tanky in combat. This can be done in many ways. One could use a shield to block attacks head on, one could have a very high health pool and just take the hits head on, the key element of being a good tank is to defeat everything around you before you can be overwhelmed.

Best Starting Class

Elden-Ring-Hero-Stormgate (1)

While no class is a bad choice for the late game, having the right starting class will determine how you are playing for the earlier parts of the game. You can always make use of one style and then use a Larva Tear later on to respec. However, the two ideal starting class choices for a tanky player are the Vagabond and the Hero. The Hero being the more “optimal” choice when you factor in point distribution.

Best Stats

You’re going to want to take a hit, so Vigor is going to be high up as a priority. Alongside this, you are going to be wanting to put points into Endurance to wear some of the heavier armor in the game — especially if you plan to use the heaviest and most tanky armor in all of Elden Ring. You will also want all but one of your flasks to heal yourself whenever your health bar is getting rather low to get back into the fight.

  • Vigor: 61 (As a slow-moving character, you will be taking hits while decimating opponents)
  • Mind: 18 (This will cover your casting requirements)
  • Endurance: 36 (You will need a very high equipment load for the Bull-Goat armor set)
  • Strength: 80 (This will be the stat your heavy-hitting weapons scale with)
  • Dexterity: 10 (Do not invest more than 1 point in this to wield the Lordsworn’s Greatsword)
  • Intelligence: 7 (Dump stat. Do not invest in this)
  • Faith: 8 (Dump stat. Do not invest in this)
  • Arcane: 11 (Dump stat. Do not invest in this)

Elden Ring: 10 Best Fire Damage Weapons, Ranked

Elden Ring is no short of excellent weapons, but if you’re especially searching for fire damage weapons, this list has you covered.

Best Weapons

Player Holding Giant Crusher Hammer

When it comes to weapons, you’re going to want armaments that are very big and heavy hitting. You may expect tanky warriors to always have a shield, and that is true for the mid-game. However, when it comes to early and late game, you’re going to want to be dual wielding for the early parts and holding your big hammer with two hands later — this is to ensure your opponent dies before you do. You will have plenty of health and defense to outlast your foes between bouts. You’ll want to start by getting two greatswords early on, such as the Lordsworn’s Greatsword and Iron Greatsword.

Lordsworn’s Greatsword

The Lordsworn’s Greatsword will require you to have 16 Strength and 10 Dexterity before you are able to wield it. This means you will need to invest 1 point into Dexterity if you started with the Hero class — but no more than just the 1. This weapon will scale with a D in Strength, and will scale with a D in Dexterity as well.

Well-crafted straight sword with an illustrious design, wielded by regulars of a lord’s army. Through blackened and damaged by years of use, it appears to have otherwise been kept in a serviceable condition, despite the soldiers having long since lost their minds.

This weapon can be acquired by heading to Gatefront Ruins and heading west. This will lead you to a Carriage with a chest. Inside the chest will be the Lornsworn’s Greatsowrd.

Bastard Sword

The Bastard Sword will require you to have 16 Strength and 10 Dexterity before you are able to wield it. Luckily you will have at least 10 Dexterity thanks to the point you invested. This weapon will scale the same as Lornsworn’s Greatsword. While some other greatswords may be enticing, this weapon will scale with a C in Strength, and a scale with an E in Dexterity (Which is preferable since there will be a larger focus on Strength going forward), these weapons only come much later in the game when there are better weapon options available.

A large sword with a straight blade This heavy sword is normally wielded with two hands, but those with sufficient strength can wield it in one alone. The hefty blade can be swung into multiple foes at once thanks to the broad, sweeping attack, making fending off crowds all the easier.

Using these two greatswords, you will jump straight at your opponents and destroy their health and stance by hitting them with both these swords at the same time. Anything that survives might hit you back, but with your high health, you will be able to repeat this to finish them without fear of dying. This weapon can be purchased from the Nomadic Merchant at the Site of Grace near Castle Morne Rampart.

Highland Axe

The Highland Axe will require you to have 12 Strength and 9 Dexterity. This weapon will scale with a D in Strength, and will also scale with a D in Dexterity. You will want this as your single-hand weapon whenever you have a shield in the other, but also having it as your off-hand while holding a weapon with two hands for its passive buff that raises roar damage by 10%.

Single-sided axe used by the warriors of the highlands. Brave combatants begin battle by crying out their names. Roars are enhanced by this weapon.

Now that you have two greatswords, you can decimate foes to earn some experience. You’ll need it to progress your way to Stormveil castle to get this next weapon. Once you see the mighty enemy from the very start of the game, the Grafted Scion, you’ll be in the right building. You will see a large painting near this enemy, and next to the painting will be a corpse with this weapon.

Redmane Greatshield

The Redmane greatshield will have a Strength Requirement of 30 before you can use it, but offers a large range of Guard Values in addition to being a greatshield. Greatsheilds are considerably heavier than other shields and they both can offer 100% physical guard. However, enemies’ attacks will bounce off your shield on the first hit instead of them wailing away at your shield and eating up your stamina from blocking.

Greatshield shaped like a fang, featuring the crest of red-maned lion. Carried by the Redmane Knights who fought alongside Radahn.

Having a combat of Redmane Shield and Highlander Axe will allow you to stand your ground against almost anything, and switching to your greatswords to rush down big things you want to massacre in a short amount of time while taking the hits. To get your hands on one, simply collect it as loot from a Redmane knight from one of the following areas: Impassable Greatbridge, Castle Redmane, or Fort Gael.

Be sure to collect any and all Golden Seeds you pass by, as this will allow you to have more flasks to top up your already high health pool. Even though you’re a tank that is accepting hits, doesn’t mean you can win long lasting fights without topping up from your flasks.

Giant-Crusher

The Giant-Crusher will require you to have 60 Strength before you can wield this high-demanding stone hammer of destruction. This weapon will scale with a C in Strength. You will want to pair this with your Highland Axe in your offhand, and then wield the Giant-Crusher with both hands as your new means to optimal damage output once you get the Troll Roar Ash of War.

A hammer made from a boulder, used in the War against the Giants. One of the heftiest weapons in the entire Lands Between. After the giants were quelled, and man turned against man in violence, this weapon was all but forgotten. Man has grown feeble in comparison to his forebears.

Head to the Site of Grace at the Outer Wall Phantom Tree. You will have to ride your spirit steed Torrent up a large staircase of enemies and two Tree Sentinels before passing through two large doors to get to it.

You don’t need staves and Sorceries to inflict magic damage in Elden Ring.

Best Ash Of War

Elden Ring Troll Roar Ash of War

Dumping Faith and Intelligence means no need for Sorceries nor Incantations — but Ash of War are another story. There are two exemplary Ash of War to consider for this build.

Stamp (Upward Cut)

Of the two Ash of War mentioned, this one is better for the earlier parts of the game. This Ash of War will give you a brief moment of Hyper Armor to deal out damage while taking a hit — dealing considerable stance damage in the process for a follow-up critical hit.

Brace armament and step into a low stance that prevents recoil from most enemy attacks.

Follow up with a strong attack for an upward strike.

This will be a default Ash of War on your Lordsworn’s Greatsword, so be sure to make use of it for the early parts of the game.

Troll’s Roar

Of the two Ash of War mentioned, this one is better for the later parts of the game. While this Ash of War appears on several weapons, you will want to put this on your Giant-Crusher. This is a slow Ash of War that takes time to get used to, but will result in reliable staggers against your opponents — followed up by a critical hit of immense damage.

Look into the distance and let out an intense roar, generating a powerful shockwave that blows back surrounding foes. Follow up with a strong attack to slam the armament down.

Head on over to the Mountaintops of the Giants location, then to the Church of Repose. From hear, you will see a large rock when you turn southeast. You can collect this Ash of War from the top of this rock.

Best Armor

Elden Ring Bull Goat Armour Set

Unlike a lot of builds that just require putting on whatever you can find and still medium roll, this build leans heavily into taking hits rather than dodging out of them. You will need the best armor for the job and no armor is better suited than the Bull-Goat Armor Set. This set features very high defensive stats for its Damage Negations and Resistances listed in the table below.

Best Talismans

Black Knife Armor On Body In Front Of Player

You will have four talisman slots to make use of. Some of these will be much easier to get than others and come along as you progress through the game.

Claw Talisman

This will increase your jump attacks by 15% for the early game, and should be replaced with the Assassin’s Crimson Dagger once you have the Giant-Crusher.

You can find this Talisman in Stormveil castle.

Roar Medallion

This will increase the damage done by both your roars and breath attacks by 15%

This Talisman can be acquired by defeating the Stonediffer Troll at the end of the Limgrave Tunnels dungeon.

Assassin’s Cerulean Dagger

Critical attacks restore 15 FP. This means that all of those stance breaks you pull off will be golden opportunities to keep topping up your FP, and only needing 1 flash allocated to FP in case it ever gets too low.

Defeat the optional boss in the Black Knife Catacombs located in Liurnia of the Lakes.

Shard of Alexander (Late Game)

Greatly boosts your attack power of Skills by 15%

This Talisman will come much later in the game once you have completed the questline of Iron Fist Alexander.

Assassin’s Crimson Dagger

Critical attacks restore 10% + 85 HP. This means that all of those stance breaks you pull off will also be golden opportunities to keep healing up from smaller enemies between the tougher ones to keep your flasks for later. Defeat the optional boss in the Deathtouched Catacombs.

Elden Ring: 13 Rarest Items In The Game, Ranked

Elden Ring has a massive world that is full of unique items & weapons. Here are some of the rarest ones you should definitely look for in the game.

How To Play This Build

elden ring colosseum update-1

For the early game, you will be using jump attacks to deal large amounts of damage and stagger foes for critical hits. You will be able to take a beating from enemies with larger health pools thanks to having healing flasks, a large health pool of your own, and high defense stats from your armor. Later you will have a greatshield and the Highland Axe to get guard breaks and plenty of counters.

This can utterly trivialize almost every non-boss fight in the game — especially with the Stamp (Upward Cut) Ash of War. With the Giant-Crusher in hands (and the Highland Axe in your offhand slot), using the Troll’s Roar Ash of War can result in an obscenely high amount of damage while topping up your FP and HP from Assassin’s Daggers. The Bull-Goat Armor will help negate a sizable chunk of all damage that comes your way while you continue to just keep roaring and restoring your FP from critical hits.
