Historic Mid-Game Hack Halts Apex Legends Global Series

Highlights

  • Pro players like Genburten and ImperialHal were hacked in the Apex Legends tournament, compromising competitive integrity.
  • Hackers gave Genburten and ImperialHal unfair advantages, prompting the postponement of the tournament by Respawn.
  • The incident has been dubbed as one of the biggest hacks in esports history, necessitating updates to the anti-cheat system.

The Apex Legends Global Series North American Finals was brought to a screeching halt earlier today after a pro player was hacked mid-game.

Noyan Ozkose, better known by his competitive alias ‘Genburten’, was just one of the professional players hacked during the tournament. In a clip shared by X user Apryze, Genburten can be seen exclaiming “I’m getting hacked, I’m getting hacked.”

His fellow teammates asked if he was still able to play, but Genburten rightly responded by saying “It’s cheating…I can see everyone. I need to leave the game, right?” The Apex professional then backed out of the Global Series Finals and returned to the lobby in sheer disappointment and panic.

Titanfall 3 Hopefuls In Disarray Following News Of New Respawn Game

Despite reports that Respawn’s new game is not Titanfall 3, fans are still searching for a glimmer of hope.

As you can see in the brief clip, the hacker had given Genburten the ability to see every enemy on the map and also had control over his in-game chat. In the left-hand corner of the screen, the hackers, who appear to go by the names ‘Destroyer2009’ and ‘R4ndom’, spammed their alias’ and the phrase “Apex hacking global series.”

Unfortunately, it wasn’t just Genburten who had his account compromised during this important match. Phillip Dosen, better known as ImperialHal, was the next victim to have his account compromised shortly after Genburten. While Genburten made the sensible decision to leave the game almost immediately, ImperialHal stayed in the match. The pro player exclaimed that he had aimbot (which automatically locks on to targets, allowing the player to hit every shot), but that it was “turning on and off.”

Apex Legends Postpones Global Series Finals

After multiple professional players were hacked over the course of the finals, Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment responded to the issue by completely postponing the tournament.

In a statement shared on X, the official Apex Legends Esports account said:

“Due to the competitive integrity of this series being compromised, we have made the decision to postpone the NA finals at this time.”

There’s no word on when the finals will be rescheduled for, but Respawn says it will “share more information soon.” Many users have pointed out how monumental this moment was, with some calling it the biggest hack in esports history.

Before Respawn announces a new date for the Global Series Finals, it needs to make some serious updates to its anti-cheat system.
