More Games Should Take Note Of Dragon Dogma 2’s Pawn System

Highlights

  • Dragon’s Dogma 2 enhances the Pawn system, making it an immersive multiplayer experience in a single-player setting.
  • Friend’s Pawns bring unique personalities and valuable knowledge to enrich your exploration and quest experiences.
  • Be cautious of the plague affecting Pawns beyond the Rift, as it can have devastating consequences on your companions.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has taken the Pawn system introduced in the first game and refined it to perfection. I love asynchronous multiplayer. Having that touch of multiplayer elements in an otherwise singular experience is something that really excited me as a gamer. It’s a big part of why Death Stranding is one of my favorite games. While very different from Death Stranding, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has now earned it place as one of the best asynchronous multiplayer experiences I’ve ever had.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Review In Progress

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an open-world Fantasy adventure you can’t afford to miss.

Creating a Pawn is a rewarding experience. They’re not your main character, but they are your main companion. In many ways, they’re just as important as your Arisen. In addition to being your main companion, they will also play that role for anyone who decides to recruit them. It’s rewarding to feel that you’re building and upgrading your Pawn for more than just yourself.

Utilizing A Friend’s Pawn

I’ve been fortunate enough to play the game with several friends who also made amazing Pawns. I always have at least one of them in my party, and I’ve come to care for them as dearly as my own Pawn. So, what makes them so amazing?

They have personalities, and they retain the knowledge of their previous adventures.

Well, Pawns don’t just pop into your world and act as combat companions. They have personalities, and they retain the knowledge of their previous adventures. If your friend has done a quest you’re on and completed it, their companion might be able to help guide you on your journey. If you’re exploring an area where your friend discovered a treasure chest, their Pawn will lead you to it. They’ll even comment on your friend’s tactics, playstyle, preferences, and accomplishments.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: How To Summon A Friend’s Pawn

Summoning Pawns is a key part of Dragon’s Dogma 2. If you want to have even more fun, summon a friend’s Pawn directly!

But that’s not all! Your hired Pawns also retain the information of the adventure they’re having while with you. So, let’s say you find a shortcut that your friend hasn’t. Their Pawn will remark on it and mention that they’ll have to tell your friend about it when they go back! It’s almost as good as having your friend along for the ride.

As someone who loves this kind of thing, I can’t tell you just how much it has enriched my experience. You also get to send Pawns back to their master with gifts. So, if you want to give your friend something you found, you can do that! It’s a really incredible way of having a multiplayer presence without directly incorporating multiplayer itself.

As my friend’s Pawn points out this and that, I learn that my friend has been here. They’re experienced this. I know what they’ve seen and what they’ve missed. And it all happens through organic gameplay. Also, Pawns have badges that they’ll progress while with you and with other adventurers. It’s pretty incredible.

Befriending Wonderful New Pawns

While I’ve highlighted the key benefits of recruiting a friend’s Pawn, please know that all of those benefits also apply to randomly hired Pawns. They can help with discoveries, quests, and so on. While it may not be as personal as having a friend’s Pawn with you, it’s still very cool to have these Pawns sharing their own adventures with you.

I have some Pawns I’ve become quite fond of, so I even favorited them so I can hire them again later. It’s always fun to recruit them later and see how they’ve grown or what they’ve learned during their time away. Likewise, I love when my Pawn returns from the Rift with tales of her adventures. She’ll tell me about harrowing encounters, victories, defeats, and anything else that interested her on her journey away from home.

All of these little touches add to the immersion of the world. The realm feels lived-in. And since so many of this game’s systems and quests are a little mysterious, the idea of collectively discovering and exploring it feels just right.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Every Vocation, Ranked

Vocations determine the weapons, skills, armor, and overall play style of a character in Dragon’s Dogma 2; here are all ten vocations, ranked.

Beware Of The Cursed Plague

Occasionally, the Pawns in your party will mention that they’ve heard of a sickness that spreads among Pawns beyond the Rift. While I expected this to come up at some point, I didn’t expect it to be so devastating. I don’t want to spoil things for those of you who want to see things for yourself, so, let’s just say that your Pawn (when afflicted) is something of a ticking time bomb. If it’s your main Pawn, figure out a way to treat them immediately. If it’s a Pawn you’ve recruited, ditch them right away. You don’t need that kind of trouble in your life. Trust me.
