Can’t be bothered to take the long way around? This player has a solution.

In order to gain access to this quest, you’ll first need to have completed A Trial of Archery, which will lead you into the lands of the Elves, to the very heart of Sacred Arbor. Once you’ve completed A Trial of Archery and rescued Glyndwr’s sister, Doireann, you’ll need to wait some time before you can actually begin The Ailing Arborheart. This is because Doireann needs to fully recover from her ordeal with the Troll that captured her. After waiting several in-game days, you should be able to begin this quest — though that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to finish it!

How To Begin The Ailing Arborheart

As detailed above, you’ll first need to have completed A Trial of Archery, then wait several in-game days to allow Doireann to rest and recuperate. Once Doireann is recovered, return to Sacred Arbor and head across the middle bridge (the left leads to the merchants, and the right leads to the inn).

At the end of the bridge, standing on a short flight of steps, will be Doireann (circled in red above). When you approach her, she will initiate a cutscene.

After this first brief conversation, follow her into the Arborheart location proper, then speak with her again at the railing.

She explains that the Arborheart, their sacred tree, is slowly withering. She tells of a time past when the tree suffered similarly, and a dwarf traveler gifted some kind of nutrient that it craves, and the tree thrived off of that. It is called ‘gwynfencha’ in Elvish, though she isn’t sure what else it might be called.

At that, you’re set out into the world with the very enigmatic objective of learning what gwynfencha actually is, and then how to get some for the Arborheart.

Maisters allow you to master a Vocation and obtain its Ultimate Skill. Here’s the location of all those Maisters and the skills they unlock.

Find Out What Gwynfencha Means

At this point, you might be left a bit confused, wondering ‘what the heck is Gwynfencha?’ This part of the quest can be exceedingly cryptic. You have little guidance on your own. There’s a trick to this, though. If you have a Pawn with the Woodland Wordsmith Specialization in your party, they will be able to find someone who can help.

When the Pawn with the correct specialization informs you that they have an idea of who could help, give them the ‘Go!’ command, and then you can follow them to the destination. Be aware: it’ll be a long journey.

  • If you’ve placed a Portcrystal in Bakbattahl, it’s worth starting your journey from there.

The people who can help are Cliodhna and her husband, Gautstafr. The journey to visit these NPCs is a long one, taking you into Battahl, through Drabnir’s Grotto, and to the Volcanic Island far to the south. This journey, along with these NPCs, are key to unlocking the Magick Archer Vocation, so you’ll be able to unlock this Vocation while visiting.

If you haven’t already helped Gautstafr get to the curative spring as part of his quest, you’ll likely need to complete that before you can continue.

Cliodhna explains that gwynfencha is known as scalecinder in the common tongue, and Gautstafr explains that scalecinder “forms in the soot of the forge, as any Battahli blacksmith could tell you.”

He then directs you to visit a smithy in Battahl.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: All Pawn Specializations & How To Unlock Them

Pawn Specializations can help you tremendously in DD2. Here’s how to unlock them all.

Visit Brokkr’s Smithy In BakBattahl

Return to Bakbattahl (though if you can, place a Portcrystal before you leave the Volcanic Island, as you’ll want to return to this location multiple times — especially to unlock the Warferer Vocation!

In Bakbattahl, you’ll find that you now have a quest marker here! Head to Brokkr’s Smithy.

Without discovering first that gwynfencha is scalecinder (and what scalecinder is), you aren’t able to advance to this point in the quest — no skipping ahead here!

Within Brokkr’s Smithy, speak with Sara. She’ll explain that they have plenty of scalecinder in their forge, but once she learns that it’s to help the elves, that adds some complications. Brokkr has some strong feelings about elves (they aren’t good), so he’ll refuse to help out of spite.

But Sara has an idea. She mentions an elven dish known as “nutraibh” that is so delicious, dwarves are practically addicted to it.

Surprisingly, this completes The Ailing Arborhead, but the Arborhead is still in need of your aid! You will receive 1600 XP for completing The Ailing Arborhead, and you will automatically start the “Out of the Forest, Into the Forge” quest.
