YouTube asks some users to pay for 4K broadcasts

YouTube has added a lot of new features over the past few months, giving users new ways to watch and be creative as well. The company is also expanding YouTube Short, giving creators a new way to earn money starting next year. While these were all excellent additions, the recent change to some, which has surfaced within the past two weeks, has raised concerns. YouTube seems to be asking some users to get a Premium subscription if they want to watch 4K content.

It is currently unknown if this is some kind of testing or a slow rollout of a new feature. There may also be restrictions on certain types of devices. Unfortunately, these details are unknown at the moment, but there are a number of reports that have increased over the past two weeks through online communities such as Reddit and Twitter. Most of the people who seem to be concerned about 4K are those who watch YouTube on their TVs, while smartphone users looked fine at 1440p or 1080p. Other users have expressed concerns about YouTube putting other decisions behind the paywall at some point in the future. YouTube hasn’t made a public statement about this change, but it’s understandable.

So what do you get with YouTube Premium? Most importantly, you get ad-free videos, along with the ability to download videos for offline playback. You also get the ability to play videos in the background or while the screen is off, picture-in-picture support, access to YouTube Originals, and YouTube Music Premium. Now, all of this isn’t cheap, as it costs $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year. While some would agree that getting all these features is worth the price, others might argue that there are other ways to get an ad-free experience. It will be interesting to see what happens when this is rolled out to the general public and if there are new alternative ways to watch YouTube in 4K.
