If you are lucky enough to use the new Edge Secure Network feature, you may now get plenty of data per month for your browsing needs.
Microsoft has been working on a VPN feature built into Edge, called Microsoft Edge Secure Network, for a few months now. Initially, this VPN offered 1GB of free data per month for those lucky enough to test it out, but now, that limit seems to have increased dramatically to 15GB, but it seems to be only for some users. The change was discovered by Reddit user Leopeva64-2, who often checks for new features in Edge before their official release.
Microsoft Edge Secure Network is a relatively basic VPN service powered by Cloudflare. Cloudflare will route your traffic to servers closest to your location, so content relevant to where you are is still served, but all data you send and receive is encrypted and your IP address is masked so that no one can intercept your data or identify you in any way. Of course, even a relatively basic feature like this has server costs so getting unlimited data for free wouldn’t be possible, but admittedly 1GB is a pretty low bar, so the feature can become almost useless for some people. However, there is a problem. This 15 GB limit appears to be a temporary offer that is only eligible for some Edge Insider users. Microsoft recently updated its support page for the Microsoft Edge Secure Network, and now the information on data limits reads:
Get 1GB of free data every month when you sign in to Microsoft Edge with your Microsoft account. A few of the first users will be on a trial period for a data upgrade, at the end of the 30-day trial the trial will reflect the normal gigabyte VPN limits.
The second sentence in that paragraph didn’t exist until very recently, which indicates that Microsoft is just now experimenting with an upgraded data limit for some users. It’s unclear why this is, or if it will be reflected in the final product once it’s made widely available.
Yes, while this feature has been available to Edge Insiders in the Canary channel since May, it still doesn’t seem to be available to everyone. Even if you are registered with the Canary Channel, you may not see the option to use Edge Secure Network. When it becomes available to the general public, Microsoft will likely offer a free 1GB plan along with a paid plan with more data, and this trial could be a way to test how this system works. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment and will update this article if we have more information.
