Disney released a statement of support for LGGBTQIA+ fans and workers today. Cast members plan to strike today as a result of Florida’s song “Don’t Say Gay Bill.” Disney Parks has published a message condemning discrimination in any form or fashion. The company also said it opposes legislative measures that violate human rights and stands in solidarity with any cast, crew and campers who want their voices heard. It’s clear from a recent investor meeting where CEO Bob Chuck responded to questions about the company’s donations to people who supported the bill, and from the moves that followed, Disney realizes that many workers resent their actions. Their social media reads, “Welcome to all who come to this happy place. Disney Parks, Experiences and Products is committed to creating experiences that support the family values of every family, and will not stand against discrimination in any way. We oppose any legislation that infringes the rights of essential human being, standing in solidarity with and supporting the LGBTQIA+ staff, crew, imaginators and fans who make their voices heard today and every day.”
Chubb released a statement to all employees of the company after a public outcry over his comments during the investment call.
“Thank you to everyone who reached out to me for sharing your pain, frustration, and grief over the company’s response to the Florida ‘Don’t Say Like Me’ bill. Talking to you, reading your letters, and meeting with you has helped me better understand how painful our silence has been.” “Obviously this is not just an issue with a Florida bill, but instead another challenge to basic human rights. I needed to be a stronger ally in the fight for equal rights and I let you down. I’m sorry. Our employees see the power of this great company As an opportunity to do good. I agree. Yes, we need to use our influence to promote that good through inclusive storytelling, but also by standing up for everyone’s rights.”
“Starting immediately, we are increasing our support for advocacy groups to combat similar legislation in other countries. We are working hard to create a new framework for our political giving that ensures that our advocacy better reflects our values,” Chabak added. “Today, we are pausing all political donations in Florida pending this review. But, I know there is a lot of work to be done. I am committed to this work and to all of you, and will continue to engage with the LGBTQ+ community so I can become an ally Better. You’ll hear more about our progress in the coming weeks.”
He concluded, “I truly believe we are an infinitely better and stronger company because of our LGBTQ+ community. I missed the mark in this case but I am an ally you can count on – and I will be an outspoken champion for protection, vision, and the opportunity you deserve.”
