In another reality, iPad nano charges without buttons

In the lead-up to his “Build” Tony Fadell took to Twitter and released some mockups of the Apple iPod nano. Most of the time when you see these types of images, they are interesting for several reasons. Basically because you get a rare glimpse into a world you will never see.

Fadel was brought on board by Apple as a contractor. He found support in this role for his idea of a hard disk MP3 player with an accompanying music store. If the hardware looks familiar, you probably know where this is headed. The idea caught the attention of Steve Jobs and thus the iPod was born. If creating one iconic product wasn’t enough, Fadell would later go on to become a co-creator of the iPhone.

Perhaps the most interesting model in the group is the iPod nano without any buttons. At this point, Apple could have gone in a different direction than the traditional iPod design. Naturally, Fadell could have worked on both the iPod and the iPhone simultaneously. But it’s still interesting to think that the iPod nano would have been buttonless in another reality. This would have been a huge leap at the time, as the clicking wheel was very creative.

Although Fadel’s tenure with Apple neared the end of 2008, he co-founded Nest Labs. This company will later be acquired by Google. Even now, his legacy and design live on at Apple. We also see his design in the latest version of the iPhone SE 3. If you want to know more about Tony Fadell, his “Build” book comes out tomorrow.
